SUMMER SESSION.
From all appeurance* the summer
session of the Georgia legislature
•promises to l>e a long and busy one.
.Among the most Important ques¬
tions that will come up for consid¬
eration are the disposal of the Sta te
road, the organization of a bureau of
immigration, a new public road law,
- educational bills providing For high¬
er arsd common school appropria-
tioiw, a bill for tj»e formation of a
technological school for girls, and
other matters of grave Importance.
In addition there will be a large
number of local bills. Many of these
questions require careful and imme-
diate -consideration, and they will
J ; tax the abilities of the best men.
The time.has come for progressive
legislation, and we believe that ive
have legislators who arc abreast of
the times and will use their best ef¬
forts to place Georgia on an elevated
and advanced plane.

date for Senator. The which disorderly marked
and disgra a eefat scenes
the caucus, and which caused one, of
the delegates to exclaim that ft re¬
minded him of an auction, were in
keeping with the character of the
man honored. In any other State,
ttIK j with any other candidate than
Mr . Chandler, it might seem strange
that a man just nominated for Unit
ed States Senator should fed obliged
to get up in a public -.caucus and
state that lie had not bought any
delegates’ votes; but the tactics of
the eX-Secetary of the Navy and the
many railroad fights at Concord
have lowered political standards in
New Hampshire.
Mr. Chandler is the kind of unfa go.
be feared, but at the same
the Democrats are content to
him maintain his position as a
of the Republican party. As
as such men as Chandler, Sher¬
man, Forftker and Ingalls control
their party organization a solid
South is a necessity. Southerners
enn never support the Republican
party with its chiefleaderscontinual¬

^ THE SUGAR ROBBERY.
Little m6re than a year ago white
sugar cost cenf a
It now costs 10 cents a
A This is not due to suddenly
i anted production. The scarcity is
and is the work of the Sugar
who are banded together in
“Trust.” Unless sugar soon/be- f
tb decrease in price, the gates o
country should oe thrown open
the competition of the sugar of
world. That would make the
Sugar Trust relinquish its hand on
the throats of the people. .
The official statistics of the Unit¬
ed States give the amount of sugar
consumed per capita at about 52
pounds per annum. The artificial in-
dlase, therefore,in the price of sugar
of 3% cents per pound means an ex¬
tra- cost to every individual who uses
this kind of sugar of $1.05 per year.
This menus an increase in the price of
sugar of this kind for every ten thous¬
and people of $19,500, for.every hun¬
dred thoffband of $195,000. Yet the
government does not raise its hand

AN ASSUKINtl SIGN.
The most assuring sign of thetimes
They ha ve learned that so long as
they can control their own local gov¬
ernments it makes but slight differ¬
ence to them which party is in con
trol of national affairs*
They have also learned that legis¬
lation alone cannot produce prosper¬
ity, but that under the metet favora¬
ble laws industry and frugality is re¬
quired to-build up a land anil pro¬
duce for its people that independence
and comfort which accumulation of
property and homes cun give. Rec¬
ognizing this fact, our people have
gone to work in earnest not only to
develop their resources, but to utilize
them and reap their benefits. Through
out the land, in country and g\v,
you will find a busy people, all intent
upon building up their individual
fortunes by honest industry and fru
gality. You hear less about “foreign
capital,” and more, about home en¬
terprise. ‘ They arono logger waiting
for rich capitalists to come down
from the North to develop the rich
resources of the South, but have
gone to , work to develop them by
their own labor.
