The only social event of impor¬
tance during the past week was the
party given on Tuesday night at
CoL J. D. Boyd’s to Miss Kitty Sear¬
cy, of Bolingbroke, who had been
guest of the house for some time. It
was largely attended and a most
pleasant affair, the large house and
spacious grounds being occupied
with pleasure loving youth. Mies
Searcy made many friends while
here, who will hope to see her again
soon.

tips of the fairest fingers in Griffin,
grapes with almost all the sweetness

Griffin could the material for such a
beautiful display be found, and hard¬

could have so beautifully arranged
it.

•f this con-
to .this city and county is
not telly appreciated, we fear. The
new and eoming industry of this
load Is fruit. This is pre-eminently
the fruit belt of Georgia. The dis¬
play of fruit at the coming conven¬
tion will surpass any ever exhibited
in Georgia. AB this tends to adver¬
tise our section, but best of all tends
to develop the new industry.
Representative fruit growers and
those interested in Horticulture from
all parts rte of of the State will be here. It
is quite likely half the members of
the legislature will be here. AB this
tends to advertise oar section and
induce j new-comers ta locate here.
This is .what we need, this is what
we mast have to keep pace with the
moving world.
& While we have the best of hotels,
they ore limited in rooms, and the
trouble is, how shall we take care 1§T‘ of

port with the impression that we
are eider unwilling dr unable
give them shelter?
Other towns—Dalton and Thomas-
viHe—entertained them hospitably.
Shall we tell short and place our-
aslevs In unfortunate comparison
with towns smaller than oars? Will
this be keeping np oar reputation?
Hie hotels of the city could accom¬
modate many of the delegates to the
convention, but inasmuch as there
iHSPbe visitors, to say nothing of
the large number of members of the
legislature who will be present, it be¬
comes necessary that the delegates
should be entertained at private
houses so that the other visitors
may hare places at the hotels.
What is here written is suggested
by a notice elsewhere, calling a final
meeting of the committee of
arrangements. They meet tomorrow
afternoon at 4 o’clock. We suggest
that the fore part of the day be de¬
voted to canvassing for fands and
homes, so that the meeting of the
committee of arrangements may be
a successful and satisfactory one.

i BICYCLE RIDING.
Whltsly Kincaid Wins In the
Mile Race,
Macon Telegraph.
Amid the yells of the usually enthu
siastic small crowd, the first of the
four bicycle races was started yester¬
day afternoon at 5:30 o'clock at
Central City Park.
C. A. Persons of Macon and B, W.
Kincaid of Griffin were on scratch in
tile one-mile dash, with J. B. Edings
at the 100-yard mark and Stubbs at
220 yard. At half-mile Kincaid
was leading, with Persons and Ed¬
ings following. The race was finish
ed in 3 ruinates and 30 seconds, with
with Persons winning, who lead Ed¬
ings and Stubbs, Kincaid having
dropped ont.
The two-miles was started with
Persons on scratch, Edings at 200-
yard mark and Stubbs one-quarter
mils start and Wilburn at400yards.
Wilburn won fn 7:28, with Persons
one length behind.
In the three miles Persons won
over Edings with 450 yards.. Thom¬
as 400, Lyons 400, McCall 480.
McCall taking third. *
When time for the five mile was
called, it was rapidly growing dark,
and the riders could not be seen
across the track. Kincaid was given
580 yards, and Edings 480 with Per¬
sons on scratch as usual. Kincaid,
with his start, won first, with Per¬
sons second and Edings third.
The prises will be delivered to the
winner this morning on orders from
the judges. The races attracted but
little attention. “
