PEACH BRANDY.
Where Some of the Peach Crop West
To.
In our fruit statistics the other day
there was one important branch
omitted, and that was the amount
of peaches that was made into bran,
dy. In an interview with Ex-deputy
Collector J. H. Ringer yesterday he
stated that in the counties of Spald¬
ing, Butts, Pike, Meriwether, Upson,
Talbot and Taylor over onehnndred
brandy stills had been registered,
the product from which would aver¬
age about 175 gallons each. This
would make 17,500 gallons, worth
about $35,00* at retail—the way
most of itgoes in this section. Count¬
ing that portion of the product which
eludes ths revenue—and it is not easy
to keep a strict watch on every bran¬
dy still—it is safe to say that $40,-
000 worth of brandy has been made
in this section this season. This uti¬
lizes 80,000 bushels of peaches, and
as the rule is an equal division be¬
tween the grower and the stiller, the
former got twenty-five cents a bushel
for fruit that could not be shipped—
a very good price.
The family that doesn’t have bran¬
dy peaches this winter may be count¬
ed as consistent teetotalers.
In this connection it may not be
irrelevant to state that the honey
crop is also good.

One of the latest devices of the
newspaper sharp is to print columns
of advertisements, free of charge, and
afterward publish comparative tables
showing the gain in advertising as a
proof of prosperity and as an induce¬
ment for more subtantial patronage.
On the principle that “nothing ex¬
ceeds like sneer*” it is hoped that
a bogus success may thus be made a
means of profit. But advertisers who
make a study ol advertising are
quick to see through this artifice.
The only true basis of-advertising
advantage is an extended publicity.
That costs money in the making and
eemmaads it in the sale of .jpjrspa-

one of them, and it «* time for Griffin

This is the view that certain enter-
priringdriseus took when approach¬
ed yesterday by that aetiveadvoeate
of the city’s interests, J.G. Rhea,and
in two hours time he had secured
sufficient stock to assure the success
of the enterprise. The charter was
obtained at the last session of the
legislature. Tim following are the
names of the subscribers: J.G. Rhea.
Bobt. T. Daniel, Henry C. Burr, J.
P. Nichols, B. R. Blakely, N. B.
Drewry, W. E. Drewry, Thoa. Nall,
M. M. Ison, Roswell H. Drake, David
J. Bally, Jr., and Douglas Glessner.
Other names may be added, bat the
above gentlemen are willing to take
all the stock, which will amount to
about $12,000. A meeting of sub¬
scribers wQl be held one day this
week to effect an immediate organi¬
sation and get to work.
The plan is to ran about three miles
of road through the principal streets
and out past the factories to the Ex¬
perimental Farm.
A 'street railroad pn Griffin will
probably pay only a moderate inter¬
est on the investment at first, half it
will prove a very fine illustration of
the enterprise of onr people, and show
the vigor of Griffin’s progress. It
will unquestionably contribute to
Griffin’s growth.
How it Look* to on Outsider,
Henry County Weekly.
Griffin is to have a new morning
paper, which will begin its career un¬
der the name of the Morning Call, the
managemeut of which is in the hands
tjf Mr. Harry ■*#£ Am. It is too
soon to make predictions as to bow
the new paper will be received, but it
does seem to us that Mr. Brown has
cast the fickle die in a field where he
has seen diaster overtake u splendid
morning paper—The Griffin Daily
Sun, and with this ill-fated paper
hardly removed from the cooling-
board of misfortune he essays to es¬
tablish another on its financial
ruins.
The Call may succeed, but the out¬
look just now would indicate a very
close call if it does. Griffin can sup¬
port one daily paper but she will
starve two.
It is passing strange that aa good
a newspaper man as Mr. Brown
proven himself that he can find
other than the crowded field he has
chosen. We wish ths young
success, but if it comes it will be
than came to a worthy defunct
decesser.
