There will have to be eorne modifi¬
cation of tbe law. governing the se-
lection of juror*, unto* wsarewiiJ-
iag that trial by jury shall become a
farce. Tbe prwent statutes, when¬
ever tested by a tidal in which the in¬
terest to general, are a hinderanee
rather than an aid to justice.
The lawyers in the Cronin trial
have been trying to fill the jury
for over a week, but nota aingieman
satisfactory to them ail has been
found. It to not at all surprising
that this should be the case. The
crime was tbe most sensational that
has occurred in Chicago for years. It
was not merely an ordinary murder;
it involved as well all sorts of nation¬
al prejudice*. • Naturally, there to
hardly a person of intelligence in Chi¬
cago who to not conversant with tbs
facts, and nine-tenths of the men fit to
be jurors have already formed some
opinion fes to the guilt or innocence
of the accused But that fact does
not necessarily prevent them from be¬
ing competent to pass upon the tes¬
timony presented to the court—in
short, from being good jurors.
The tremble the lawyers bad in se¬
curing Jurors in the Woolfolk case will
readily be called to mind. Nearly
everybody in Georgia hod beard of
this most unnatural and atrocious
slaughter of a whole family, and ac¬
cording t* law were not competent
jurymen. Yet nobody doubts that
there were plenty of citixens of Bibb
County, whatever their previous
opinions, who would have given an
unbiased verdict on the evidence pre¬
sented in these trials. These facts are
not arguments against the methods
of conducting them. The present
laws, If not repealed, should be modi¬
fied so that in selecting a jury a pre¬
mium will not be placed on ignore nee.
