On Account of the Removal of
Corporal Tanner.
Promoted by Detective* on HI* Trip
from Washington So Deer Park—Threat¬
ening Anonymoui Letter* In the Presi¬
dent’* Mail—Mysterious Action* of S
Drunken Nth at the White House.
Washington, Sept 18.-When Presi¬
dent Harrison left the city on Saturday
his immediate companions were his son,
Bussell, and Congressman G-rosvenor,
of Ohio. The three were driven hur¬
riedly to the Baltimore and Ohio sta¬
tion, and were noticed by only a few of
the waiting passengers as they hurried
through the station and then ont a side
gate to a special oar whioh was in Wait-
Folii wed by a Coupe.
Bnt all the way from the White
House to the depot the president’s car¬
riage was followed by a coupe, the
driver of which kept his horse’s nose al¬
most touching the rear of the first men¬
tioned vehicle. The president’s party
had not time to alight when two man
lamped quickly glanced from the coupe and
hurriedly up and down the
street and then in the direction of the
station.
Boarded the Preeident’a Car.
One of the strangers nodded to the
occupants of the carriage, and Presi¬
dent Harrison and his companions got
out and followed him through the star
tion. The other stranger followed close¬
ly in the rear and imitated the example
iff his oomrade by scanning closely the
face of every person passed on the way
to the train. The two mysterious men
boarded the president’s car, and that
was the last seen of them.
They Were Detectives.
The two mysterious members of the
president’s party were deteotives, who
had been detailed from a private agency
to see the president safely to Deer Park,
and their espionage (lid not cease until
Mr. Harrison had crossed the threshold
of his cottage at the mountain resort.
For several days the intimate friends
of Mr. Harrison have been much agi¬
tated on account of the bad feeling man¬
ifested in certain quarters over the Tan¬
ner case.
Anonymous Letters.
Several very ugly anonymous letters
were found in the president’s mail, and
injudicious threatening friends remarks of by ex-Commissioner desperate and
