A New Opera.
Mr. Octavus Colm, formerly one of the edi¬
tors of The American Press Association, and
now managing editor ot The Chnrieston (S.
C.) Daily and Weekly World and Sunday
Budget, and Mr. W. B. Seabrook, also of The
World, and a poet of considerable reputation,
are at work on a new comic opera, to be
called “Niatrici.” The opera will be to th
acts, tbe first of which is laid to Spain, the
second to Persia and the third to Greece. The
time of the opera is about 1820. The comedy
fa furnished by three brothers (triplets), a wet
nurse, an aged lover and a scheming papa.
The libretto will be ready for the composer, a
New Tork musician of note, to about three
weeks.
P. T. Baraum tells a story of how he was
one day walking beside a railroad track with
a man who was very hard of hearing. A
train was approaching, and as it rounded tbe
curve the whistle gave one of those nerve de¬
stroying shrieks that seem to pierce high
heaven. A smile broke over the deaf man’s
