veyed, it is said, in the suite of car¬
riages which once belonged to the
Empress Eugenie, bat it is sate to
say that their upholstery has been
materially altered. The gilt mod
tapestries may be there stiU, but they
conceal iron and steel bullet-proof
casings to resist the attacks of imagin¬
ary assassins. For weeks the King
of Denmark's palace baa been beeieg-
ed with spies and detectives, and th«
illustrious guest* assembled there
have complained that life under such
circumstances is devoid of interest.
The railways over which the Czar
must pass are picketed with soldiers,
and this royal despot, with a Gar¬
gantuan appetite and the nervous
dread of an infant, him advertised a
route that he will in all probability
•change before the honr for departure.
A small array of the Russian secret
service will be in Berlin on his arrival,
and the detective force of Germany
will also be concentrated there. His
entertainers will not have a moment’s
peace while he is in their company,
and the Czar and his attendants will
be in constant fear of imaginary
daggers and bqllets. He is
said to be always on the alert for
traitors in hie household, and well he
may be, for the Nihilists have again
mid again brushed away the barriers
of officiality as though they were
wisps of straw.
Wbat a spectacle is this in the
midst of nineteenth century civiliza¬
tion—what a contrast to the move¬
ments of the President of the United
who, safe in bis reliance upon
the enlightened sentiment of the peo¬
ple and the guarantees of constitu¬
tional freedom, passes from one end
of this great country to the other
without as much as a guard or an
attendant! The President is abso¬
lutely secure, except from the vaga¬
ries of a crank, but the Czar line
made Russia almost a nation of
cranks. Smarting nnder his iron
despotism and reienless cruelties,
and his brutal refusal to relax an
iota of his prerogative in favor of
rational liberty, the intelligence
and culture of his empire have com.
bined against him with the grim de¬
termination to sweep him and his
dynasty from the face of the earth.
That they will sooner or later ac¬

C OTTON AND POETRY.
Cotton and poetry, says Jthe St.
Louis Republic, are not supposed
to go hand-in-hand down the aisles
of fame, but occasionally, fact and
fancy must come together, and it is
pleasant to see them harmonize
gracefully. * A case in instance de¬
veloped in St. Louis cotton circles
recently. A well known firm of
factors received, with a consignment
of cotton from the poetic shipper, a
letter of advice containing the fol¬
lowing pathetic request:
One by one the bale* are coming
Faster still the dollars fall.
Few are coming, many going, them all
Do your best to grasp
After surveying the market with a
view to disposing of the cultured cus¬
tomer's consignment to the best
vantage, the result was mailed back
by the sympathetic bead of the house
as follows: .

Mercurial Poison.
Mercury i# frequently injndieiously used by
quack doctors in cases of malaria and blood
poison. Its aftereffect is worse than the ote
igial disease. B, B. B. (Botanic Blood Balm)
contains no mercury, but will eliminate mer¬
curial poisi on from the system. Write to
Hood Balm Co., Atlanta, Ga., for book of
convincing proof of its curative virtue.
A. F. Britton, Jackson, Tenn., writes: “1

fever at last broke, my system was saturated
