Gteee facts, the Washington corres¬

says on authority unquestionably

Pension Commissioner is as far away
as ever. It adds that General Bae
of Minnesota would have been ap¬
pointed before this but for General
Alger’s opposition. ..
What a spectacle! The President
afraid to make an appointment
without the approval of his most ]
powerful and bitter opponent in the
Republican party. In his political
career in the past General Aigwr has
shown neither good Judgment nor
farsightedness, bat on this occasion
his hand seems to be all t rumps.
Hie fanners of Nebraska, Kansas
Missouri, Texas and Arkansas have
a very instructive object lesson as to
the manner in which a protective
tarifi protects them in the present
conflict of tariffs between the United
States and Mexico. It aS grows oat
of a treasury ruling. Heretofore the
lead found in Mexican silver ores as
a component part of the silver ore
Iim been brought into this country
tree of duty. But in order to please
the lead producers in Colorado the
lead in the Mexican silver ores must
pay a duty of IK cents per pound.
The collection of this duty on the
baser metal will have the effect of
excluding Mexican ores. The Mexi¬
can government in retaliation has
ordered an increase of duties on
hogs, cattle, mules, beef, pork, salt¬
ed meats, etc., etc. Thus the injury
done by our government to the
Mexican silver miners has been re¬
peated by the Mexican government
upon the farmers of the West, who
have been selling live stock and pro¬
visions in Mexican markets. This
little tariff war is most untimely at

It is now understood that the Pan-
American Congress which is touring
through the east, will, after their re¬
turn from the present trip, hold a
business session, and after disposing
of such matters as demand their at¬
tention, will start on a tour through
the South, visiting the principle
cities and towns. This is well. The
discussion on the subject has been
productive of good. The Pan-Ameri¬
cans ffhonld come to Griffin.
As an offset to the Republican vic¬
tory in Chattanooga yesterday, it
might be well to state that Indiana¬
polis, the home of President Harri¬
son, elected a Democratic mayor and
city clerk. Two years ago Indiana¬
polis elected a Republican mayor by
a large majority. This is the first
time the Democrats have elected a
mayor since 1874.
Every third person you meet is

The causes are easily recorded. A

It is reported that Tanner is going

they want to hear him talk, and the
louder and longer he talks the more
pleasing it wdi be to them.
