The Matter of Tithes.
Rev. McKay preached an interest¬
ing sermon at the Presbyterian
church on Sunday morning on the
subject of tithes, taking thegrpund,
and proving it conclusively from
from both the old and the new testa¬
ment, that a tenth part of a Chris¬
tian’s income is due to the church
fust as much today as in times past,
and should be paid. This is a matter
that is attracting wide spread atten¬
tion and discussion throughout the
Christian world, in both congrega¬
tion and pulpit, and the speaker stat¬
ed that there are now many in this
country who do conscientiously pay
their tithes, and showed how
through natural laws—which are
God’s laws—they are prospered by
it: being obliged to know their in¬
come that they may shareit with the
Lord, keeping exact account of their
business and living always within
their means.
For this last and for other good
reasons, people butside of the church
might well afford to pay an equal
amount, dividing it among the dif¬
ferent churches because of the good
they confer upon a community out¬
side of the religions inspiration that
they may be to the giver. One rea¬
son not given for the prosperity of
those who thus give away a teath
part of their income, is the iact that
this tenth part is usually ^spenfc in
luxuries and useless dissipation,
which are often not only of no benefit
but of absolute detriment to health
and that right manner of living
which alone can insure success in life.
It is the wisdom of Herodotus on
viewing the well filled board of a
gourmand:
“Fool, not to know that half is more than
||| the whole,
Nor the greater blessing of afrsgal board.”
But we are obliged to dissent from
one of Mr. McKay’s conclusions,
when he says that if a man considers
the chnrch simply an insurance
against the horrors of hell, then
possibly a tithe would be too much
to give. On the contrary, we think
there are some men who would get
their insurance very cheap if they
gave nine-tenths of their income to
the church and lived on the other
tenth.

way on the
Both parties are and reside
near Turin. Armed with the docu¬
ments referred to, Sheriff Carmical
invaded that peacRiol precinct and
soon snoceeded to apprehending the
culprits, whom he took under the
shadow of his wing and detained un
til the arrival of the 10 a. m. train.
He had other business in the vicinity
which required his attention, how¬
ever, and concluded to handcuff his
prisoners and send them up to New-
nan in charge of one of the train of¬
ficials. Mr. Ed Long kindly consent¬
ed to look after their comfort in
tranistu and turn them over to a
policeman upon his arrival here.
Now, it is the invariable custom tor
One of our police officials to meet all
trains at the junction, and it wan a
knowledge of this fact that induced
the sheriff to forward the prisoners
to their destination in the
bat on tbte particular
forenoon it so happened that when
the the train pulled up at the cross¬
ing no policeman was to sight any¬
where. For a moment the tempor¬
ary custodian of the sable bunco
professionals was somewhat flabber¬
gasted. The sheriff had failed to
provide a contigent fond to cover
the expense of a trip to Carrollton
and return, and Ed did not feel dis¬
posed to extend the excursion with¬
out an additional appropriation.
He soon found a way out of his dilem¬
ma, however, and the scheme worked
like a top, He deposited the prison¬
ers on the platform and told them
to hang Around until some one Came
along with authority to put them
in jail. They lingered good-natured¬
ly until the train left and then march¬
ed to the jail, without escort or of¬
ficial espionage of any sort. Upon
arriving at the jail they found the
jailor absent, and had to await the
arrival of that official before they
could get in.
Sheriff Carmical says he never had
such an experience with a prisoner
before, and was so impressed by their
excellent behavior that when the
cases are called he will commend the
culprits to the leniency of the court.

No Ohio Excursion.
A short time ago we announced
that Maj. W. L. (Ressner, the (ten.
traPs Commissioner of Immigration,
would probably go to Ohio and or¬
ganize an excursion of Ohio farmers
to come to Georgia and visit the
State Fair and Piedmont Exposition,
Such was his intention, but we are
sorry to learn that he was prevented
from carrying out bis plans. Imme¬
diately upon his return from the
Georgia farmers excursion to the
Northwest, he began negotiations
with the roads north of the Ohio
river for excursion rates. Commis¬
sioner Slaughter, of the Southern
railway and Steamship Association,
was enlisted in this work and request¬
ed excursion rates from the roads
north of the Ohio river. After much
correspondence, answers were receiv¬
ed from the various roads that they
could not give the rates asked. By
the time this answer was received it
was too late to do anything farther,
and as it was useless to attempt to
organize an excursion upon full
rates, Maj. Gleesner was compelled
to abandon his plan. It was no
fault of his or the Central’s that the
plan could not be carried out, for
every effort was made to carry it
out. It is but just to say that every
Southern road entered heartily into
the plan, and it only faded because
the co-operation of the Northern
roads could not be secured.
