and it swept Iowa. In 1892 that
music will be heard around every

Many Londoners are disposed to
believe that the the world’s fair of
1892 will not be held in New York.

if that city doesn’t wake up to the
effort to secure tt, she will get left,

this country.
No party on earth has the immor¬
tality of the Democracy. Against
the most fearful odds and the most
gigantic frauds, it still leads in the
United States by more than one hun¬
dred thousand and of the white
vote by one million or more. The
broines or the party should be put to
work to make these m ijorities ef-

and that Is saying a great deal.
When she arrived in Washington the
other evening, to attend ex-Secretary

that she hoped her trunk would be
sent to Col. Wilson’s house at once.
Immediately half a dozen railroad

attempt to have her wish gratified.

this increase Is to be continued until
the city has a thoroughly equipped

increase on the rates will carry it
960,000 more. The cause tor this ad¬

Usngross meets in annual session
three weeks from Monday. It will lie
tiie first meeting of the new Congress
since a Republican President was in¬
stalled. The House of Represents
tives is Republican the first time in
right years. Under such circum¬
stances we might expect that our
Republican friends would be very
happy when they came together at
Washington. But alas! then is a
skeleton at the feast. It is a Bel-
shazzer banquet, and ominous hand¬
writing stands out on the wall,
which requires no Daniel to interpret.
In letters that burn they will read
the seabof their doom in such words
ns “Ohio” and' “Iowa.” It is too
_ bad to spoil our Republican friends’
flint reunion after their great* ictory
cd 1888. But they have their own

The point woe plainly seen in the
different States where the contest
took place. In all the states except
Virginia the Democratic state con¬
vention took advanced ground on
the question of tariff reform, and the
issues presented in five of these states
are comprehensively set out as fol¬
lows :
"Hie New York convention reaffirm¬
ed the National platform of 1888
and ‘steadfastly advocated the prin¬
ciples of tariff reform.’ Democratic
plurality, 28,000.
“The New Jersey convention reaf¬
firmed the National Demoerrtie plat¬
form of 1888.’ Democrat plurality,
11 , 000 .
“The Ohio convention reaffirmed
the national platform of 1888, 'es¬
pecially that part of itdemanding a
reduction of tariff taxes.’ Foraker
is beaten, hie plurality of 22,827 In
1887 is wiped out and Ohio is Demo¬
cratic for the first time in six years.
‘The Massachusetts convention
declared boldly for‘free raw materials
and lower duties upon the necessities
of life.’ The Republican plurality of
82,000 last year is nearly overcome,
nod Massachusetts, a former Gibral¬
tar of Republicanism, is made a
doubtful state.
“The Iowa convention declared
itself In ‘opposition to the unconsti¬
tutional and unjust policy of high
tariff taxation, which robs the many
to enrich the few.’ Result, a politi¬
cal revolution. The state Is carried
by the Democrats for the first time
in its history.”
In spite of the hostility of Euro¬
pean monarchies, the Paris Exposi¬
tion, which closed yesterday, has
been an industrial and artistic sup-
cess. The meagreness of the United
States exhibit was partially atoned
for by the electrical display, which
was one of the chief wonders of the
Exposition; while the exhibit of the
wealth and vastness of the resources
of the Argentine Republic was
scarcely less surprising. The result
of the Exposition should stimulate
interest in the World’s Fair of 1892,
in which all nations of the world ir¬
respective ol politics, are certain' to
be represented.

and Mr. Brice have interests in com-
monnnd many subjects for discussion,
it » understood that the topic un¬

a successor to Senator Payne, of
Ohio in the United States Senate.
Both Messrs. McLean and Brice have
been conspicuous aspirants for the
position, and have been regarded by
some as likely to make tbecaucusthe
scene of many lively incidents before
a conclusion was reached, bat it is
now understood that the conference*
have resulted in the withdrawal of
Mr. McLean from the contest, leav¬

date for the position. It is under¬
stood that Mr. McLean will throw

wealthy capitalist of Ohio, named
Thomas (no relative of Brice’s asso¬

mentioned for the office, but Brice’s

The result denotes at once the re¬
covery of the country from the busi¬
ness alarms excited durmg the last
campaign, and a protest against the
Republican party’s management of
National affairs. It is, in several
States, an expression on State issues,
but also an expression of popular
feeling on the course of National ad¬
ministration, President Harrison
has not pleased nor satisfied the
country, and an emphatic protest
has been sent up to him. Similar
protests were voted after two Re¬
publican administrations had begun,

victories in the succeeding Presiden¬
