It Is also hinted that the Administra¬
tion will endeavor to make the sub¬
ject prominent in one way or anoth¬
er. And as ft is a large question,
and is closely bound up in the whole
scheme of national finances, the top*
| ic is likely to be of considerable Sa¬
lt is worthy of note that in its in¬
ternational phase the silver problem
just now presents an improved ap¬
pearance. The improvement, too,
comes from an unexpected quarter.
Efforts to adjost the silver question
on an international basis have been
defeated by the obstinate adherence
of the English Government to a gold
monetary standard.
It eanaot be said at present that
the English Government, or the
bonkers who sway Its decisions in
financial matters, show signs of re¬
laxing these hard-and-fast single
standard principles. But the first
step fu that direction has been taken.
The Exchequer and the Bank of Eng¬
land are doing all in their power to
increase and facilitate the circulation
of subsidiary silver coinage in the
United Kingdom. The Government
itself is paying workmen in its em¬
ploy in silver. The English mint
has purchased large amounts of sil¬
ver bullion for coinage. The move¬
ment has already caused a rise of
four cents ia the market value of sil¬
ver. The progress of the new ideas
will be watched with interest. It isi
possible that when the time comes
again for international action Eng¬
land will be lees stubborn than here¬
tofore.
