Never Heard of “Oavy Crockett’s
Coon”?
That’s queer! Well, it was like this:
Col- Crockett was noted tor his skill
as a marksman. One day he leveled
his gun at a racoon in a tree, when
the animal, knowing the Colonel's
prowasa, cried out, “Hello, there! Are
you Davy Crockett ? If you are, I’ll
just come down, for I know I’m a
gone coon.” Just takkea dose of
Dr. Pierce’s Pleasant Purgative Pel¬

Hack From the West.
R. W. Hale, of Jolly, returned last
week from a two weekR trip to sever¬
al of the western states.
He says that corn in Kansas is
selling at 25 cents per bushel and
that there is not much market for it
even at that price. Apples are haul¬
ed hundreds of miles and sold at a
small price. The people wear rag¬
ged clothes, and seem half starved.
The one sure crop in that state, Mr.
Hale says, is corn which will average
75 bushels per acre.
The Indian Territory prairies are
very fine,.but a Georgian would la¬
bor^ under great disadvantages
there.
In Arkansas they raise like* cotton, but
it is not profitable there it is in
Georgia. Cotton pickers get f 1 per
hundred and their board, but noth-
is cleared and the farmers are pover¬
ty-stricken.
Coming home the states of Illinois
and Ohio presented a pleasing con¬
trast to the hard life of Kansas and
Arkansas.
Mr. Hale is satisfied beyond a
reasonable doubt that the west is
not the poor man’s country. He
says you could not run him out of
Georgia.
