Cleveland as a politician, not
only is the best exponent of the Dem-
ocratic doctrine, but as a gentleman
is after the South’s own heart. Says
an exchange:
“A very unusual scene was wi tness-
ed in a street car in New York the
other day—that of an ex-President of
the United States giving up his seat
to a working girl. Mr. Cleveland was
ridding to his office, and the earwas
full. When the girl entered nobody
seemed to be going to offer her a
seat, and noticing this, the ex-Pfesi-
dent arose, politely inristed that she
should take the seat he had vacaifcL
and made the rest of the trip stand-
ing. The young girl did not know
him, him, and and doubtless doubtless when when she she disco discov¬ 1
ers that it was an ex-President who
gave up his seat for her, she will ad-
mire Mr. Cleveland more than she
ever did before) and she will pot for¬
get that the space that was so comfort¬ grace,
fully yielded to her was very
able, because it was large enough to
accommodate two girls of average
size.”
