ing which a plan might be determin-
ed upon by which a hotel might be
erected upon the property—a hotel
of such a character as would attract
Northern HnaUuMi tnnriiia tourists seeking owtinir refuge refucfl
from the chill blasts of the North in
the healthful climate of the Sunny
Sooth.
The commissioners have wanted an
$100,000 structure erected upon the
lot, but hotel property, as a rale,
not making such returns as other
enterprises offered, our capitalists
were deterred from subscribing to
the stock.
Since that time, in order tbut the
benefits might be reaped by the city,
they have conceived the plan of or¬
ganizing a company with a capital
stock of one hundred thousand dol¬
lars, to afct as an improvement asso¬
ciation.
Fifty thousand dollars of the capi¬
tal stock of this company is to be
devoted to the erection and equip¬
ment of a first-class hotel upon the
old court house property. The re¬
maining fifty thousand dollars to be
used in purchasing property and the
erection of manufacturing buildings
upon, to be offered as inducements to
manufacturers to come here and lo¬
cate.
This latter plan is based upon
that of other Southern cities, which
by this means have been built up ra¬
pidly and solidly, and at the same
time rendered good returns to those
who have invested their money in the
company.
To perfect the organization of this
company, ten of our leading bankers
and business men, have formed
themselves into a syndicate, to raise
the one hundred thousand dollars
necessary. The company for whom
this capital will be raised is to be
known as the Americas Manufactur¬
ing and Improvement Company.
The syndicate has arranged all the
preliminary matters, and upon Jan¬
uary J. will place in the bankB sub.
spription lists to the capital stock,
wnich their friends, and citizens in¬
terested in the advancement r and
improvement of Americas, can sub¬
scribe. These lists will be open to
the public for thirty days. Each
share of the stock will be of the value
of one hundred dollars, and will be
disposed of at par. Ten per cent, of
the amount will be collected at
thebegining and assessments for the
remainder frill be made in such
amounts and at such times os the
work demands, or the directors see
fit to call for.
When the subscription lists are
closed upon January 81, should
entire stock not have been subscrib¬
ed, the ten men composing the syndi¬
cate have bound themselves to sub¬
scribe the necessary amount.
The plan is the most feasible which
has been proposed, and by it the sev.

The Senate has enlarged its com¬
mittee on the celebration of 1892 to
15, and it transpires that the new
committee contains a majority not
favorable to holding n celebration
jn New York city. Many oi the New
York people, however, do not seem
to have found this out. It is said
that Boss Platt, of New York, thinks
it would be more difficult for the Re¬
publicans to carry that State in ’92
if a big fair were to be held there
while the campaign is in progress
this is a fact, it might be well for the
Democrats to vote in favor of hold¬
ing the celebration in New York.
If the Republicans are, as reported,
going to vote in favor of Chicago for
party reasons it will be wise for Dem¬
ocrats to vote against Chicago for
party reasons. But we shall carry
the State of Illinois in 1892 no mat¬
ter where the big Fair is held.
One of the amusing features of the
session thus far is the absence
leadership ou the Republican side
the House. It is evident that Mr.
McKinley only leads when the tariff
is up for discussion. Speaker Reed
will probably have to do the
