WILL MAKE HIS MARK.
Not a Talker But a W orker—Sketch of
Pal. Brlee.
‘•The Man About Town” of the
New York Commercial-Advertiser, in
an article headed “A Man Who May
Become a Senator,” has the follow¬
ing on Mr. Brice;
As Col. Calvin 8. Brice is likely to
lie elected to the Senate from Ohio,
his personality becomes even more
interesting than while he is looked
upon simply as a figure in Wall street.
He is as different from the ordinary
speculative financier as any man can
be. He gives close attention to his
business, and carries on his enter¬
prises in a large and free-handed way.
But he is not the kind of a man to
talk shop or think shop at all times
and under all circumstances. During
the last presidential canvass, when
he was managing the affaire of his
party, he gave some attention to his
business affaire; but be was steadily
at his post in the Twenty-ninth
street headquarters, and was always
ready to see anybody who had any¬
thing to say. He is, perhaps, the
quickest man to see a point nnd to
decide a question that has ever held
a similar position. This was of
greut advantage to him during the
canvass, and enabled him, as he
mastered the details of it more and
more, to do an amount of work quite
incomprehensible to the ordinary
business man.
But even during those exciting
times he did not give all his atten¬
tion either to politics or to business.
He is what is known iu bibliographic¬
al circles, both ns a book man nnd a
bookish man; that is he collects
books nnd he rends books. Even
when thus crowded with work he
was never so much in a hurry that
he couldn’t find time to keep up fair
ly with current literature, or entire¬
ly to lose sight of the fact that
he liked a good edition or was
tuna «f « fine bindinar. Perhaps
no man who ever held such a
position wqs more popular with
his subordinates und employes than
wns Col. Brice, and the same is true
of him at his office and in the street.
OU So that Lllal persons JF71DU1U3 who vv no 1*1 are v accustomed
to think of rich men in politics as
simply in it because they have mon
ey, will do well to determine in their
own minds that Calvin S. Brice is not
this soi t of a man. He is well up in
the principles, the history and tradi¬
tions of politics, und if he goes to
the senate will certainly make his
mark. He will not carry his shop
into that body, as some of its rich
members have done, but will give
careful attention to the duties of his
office will soon make his mark. He
will not talk very much, but he will
do excellent work on committees.

THE BARNESVILLE MURDER.
Two of the Parties Remanded to Jail
Without Ball.
Barnksvii.i.k, Dec. 80.—When the
justice court convened Saturday
morning for the preliminary trial of
the men implicated in the murder of
Pink Lawrence, the accused, Brown,
Cauthen and Matthews, waived ex*
ninination nnd were remanded to
jail to await their trial at the super¬
ior court.
The duty of the court was there¬
fore, confined to the examination of
the other two parties to the shoot¬
ing, Sel»e Shaw nnd Tom Abbott.
The case of the latter was dismissed
after a full inquiry. Shaw was found
guilty of riotous conduct, interfering
with public worship and carrying
concealed weapons, but was admit¬
ted to bail to await further hearing.
Titc thoroughness with which
these inquiries have l>een conducted
shows a commendable spirit on the
part of the powers that be to see
that justice is not thwarted. To
this spirit is possibly due the fact
noticed by nil that the negroes have
behaved remarkably well through
all this excitement.

THIEVES FALL OUT!
AND LIKEWISE TARIFF MEN
DISAGREE.
New Kiiglaud Want* Free Iron and
Boal, But Pennsylvania and
Alabama Want Pro¬
tection.
W ahhinuton, Dec. 30.—The trouble
of the Republicans in the matter of
the tariff has begvn. A good many
of the New England Republicans,
Governor Ames of Massachusetts
heading the list, are in favor of free
coal and free iron ore from Canada—
from nowhere else—to rescue the New
England manufacturers from their
difficulties. Those manufacturers
are now engaged in a hopeless strug¬
gle against Nature, butting against
the superior advantages of Pennsyl¬
vania and Birmingham, Ala., and
other points in the South. In the
old days the New England manufae
ture of iron was very successful. In
some of the finer processes it was
better than elsewhere. This was tie-
fore Pennsylvania and the Southern
iron industries had received their
development. Now the New England
men are trying to overcome the na¬
tural difficulties which have grown
up ns the country has developed.
Instead of taking their foundries to
the places where the iron can be pro¬
duced most cheaply, they are now
seeking to break down, for their in¬
dividual benefit, the system of which
they are a part.
The hearing before the Ways and
Means Committee last week on this
subject was very significant, and
none the less so because some of the
most prominent Republicans in New
England took part in it. Their testi¬
mony was in favor of modifying the
protective system, as far as they are
themselves concerned, oblivious of
the fact, which the Pennsylvania
and Ohio members of the Committee
are keenly alive to, that the protec'
tive system is a chain of many links,
and that the duty on iron and coal
is one of the strongest of these links.
These New England free raw material
men desire a modification of the
tariff for themselves, but they op¬
pose, as was clearly made apparent
in the testimony of today, free raw
material for the smaller manufactur¬
ers of iron, wire and the like. They
are in favor of free trade as to the
materials which enter into the ar¬
ticles they manufacture, but they are
Btrrmnwlj' nf
duty on the manufactured article
itself for the benefit of the consumer.
Their attitude is causing a good
deal of agitation in the Republican
and protectionist camp, and is giv¬
ing the straight Republicaas from
New England much concern. This is
a subject which the Ways and Means
Committee of the House and the
Committee on Finance of the Senate
hoped would have been smothered in
some way. To have jt brought thus
prominently to the front on the very
first day of the Ways and Means sit¬
ting is very disheartening.

A Runaway Marriage.
On Saturday afternoon William
Kilgore and Miss Lida lines, opera¬
tives at the Kincaid M’f’g Co. Mills,
appeared before Justice Stilweil with
a properly issued license and after-
answering the usual questions were
married by him. Shortly after the
ceremony was performed a telephone
message wns recei ved asking wheth
er such parties had been married or
not. An answer in the affirmative
brought the parents of tbe bride
down, who got out a writ of habeas
corpus, placed it in the hands of
Bailiff Johnson with instructions to
arrest the bride, which he did about
dark and the writ was heard be¬
fore Ordinary Hammond, later
in the evening. The question
arose us to whether tiie young lady
was over fourteen years of age. Her
mother swore that she was only
twelve years old, the young lady
saying she was several years older.
Mrs. Imes did not have the family
records which were near Athens, so
the hearing was postponed until to¬
day, in order to allow time for send¬
ing after the records. An order was
rend giving Hie young lady in the
charge of the bailiff until the hearing,
whereupon she was escorted to the
residence of Mr. Johnson to remain
until the writ was decided.

Ail Interesting Ilible Society.
The Bible society of Saint-Gerxnain-en-
Laye, on the Seine, fifteen miles from
Paris, of which the Rev. Paul Rayroux,
of that city, is the president, and the
American minister at Fails is ,, on,,,
of the board of directors, sold during the
past yearthrough M. Gahorriand thirty-
two copies of the Holy Bible, 3S0 copies
of the New Testament, 280 copies of por¬
tions of the Bible. The work is small
hut important when it is considered that
the Romish church dominates the place,
with its bitter anathema against the
Holy Scriptures, and that it was the
birthplace of Louis XIV, who called him¬
self Le Grand Monarque, and who cov¬
ered himself with eternal shame by re-
vokihg the edict of Nantes, which had
been issued by his celebrated grandfather,
Henry IV. The coat of arms of Saint
Germain represents a cradle with the
motto, “Here was horn, Sept. 6, 1638,
Louis XIV,’’ and the Saint Germain
Bible society began its existence in the
same place on Sept. 16, 1880, 242 years
after the former’s birth. If Ixrnis XIV
