“YOU can’t kesp a womuno man down.”
Yon may take him in the shops or find him
in the flelda:
Where ’er the hammer tripples or kindly har¬

In the village or the himlet, in the city or

But yon never can, no never, keep the work-

In the “battles of this life” honest labor
tells the tale,
And tlie labor of the heart and hand rarely

But you never can, no never, keep a working

COURT ANECDOTES.
•
The law being one of the most
learned of the professions, it con¬
tains within its ranks the best
raconteurs and the most apprecia¬
tive listeners to genuine humor and
wit, and many are the jokes that are
told during tbe interims of court.
The efforts of several parties to
get off the juries brought out the
following from the teeming brain of
Col. Hammond:
Once when a Georgia judge was
empaneling a jury, he said that if
any one wished to be excused from
service reasons should be given at
once and their sufficiency would be
duly considered. One man had a
sick child, and another a sick eow.
Present ly, after considerable rumina¬
tion, tin Irishman arose. His face
and attitude bespoke a heavy sor
row and a reverent humiliation to
divine iVovidence. His words were
few tv.nl simple :
‘•J "Iff”, me woife’g did,” with
stoin H-hic emphasis on the “did.”
TIi:*judge’s heart was touched,and
ifc:s>tid: “Well, my good man, I
guess we’ll have tp let you go.”
The Irishman slowly took his hat
and went. When he had gotten his
body well outside of the room he
poked his face back through the
nearly closed door, with a triumph¬
ant grin, and Baid:
“Yis, sor; an’ she’s been did fhorty
yeur.”
The sheriff was told to let him go,
for the judge was Irish himself.
Here is another good one, told by
the inimitable Col. Womack between
of : .
When John L Hall was judge of

from those that have already ap¬
