Compfrints come from oil sections
of the country about the census, and
as to the carelessness and incomplete¬
ness of the work, there is no longer
difference of opinion anywhere. The
situation is clearly one that in cora-
moa honesty calls for Congressional
What Democrat or what
willjtake the matter up
propose and fight for remedial
legislation? No one believes that a
true census has been taken yet. It is
time for Congress to step in and pro¬
vide that one shall be taken. If the
majority will not act, it certainly is
the duty of the minority in Congress
to make the best possible contest to
expose—if, unhappily, they are
unable to correct—the gigantic
fraud.
For several years Oapt. It. J. Red¬
ding, the nop superintendent of the
Georgia experiment farm, has held
tiie office of government statistician
for this state. He is an expert in the
collection and tabulation of statis¬
tics and has done the work required
of him as well as well as it possibly
could hare been done, but because he
is a Democrat, and for no other rea¬
son, he has been relieved of this office.
It pays only 9700 a year, but some
hungry Republican spied it out and
went for it. It is important that
arop reports and other information
furnished by the person who holds
office should be full and accurate,
toe work will now probably be
turned over to some bungler merely
beeause he belongs to President Har¬
rison’s party.
A good deal has been written in
jest and in-earnest about Kentucky
“houah," but it remained for Gov.
Buckner of thatstate to demonstrate
that no sacrifice is great enough to
maintain the proverbial integrity
fqr which the commonwealth is noted.
During Gov. Buckner’s Incumbency
the state treasury was robbed of
980,000, but it does not appearthat
he was in any way responsible for the
defalcation. Still the matter has
weighed upon his mind, andhissensi-
tive honor suggests no relief exempt

restitution. He has, therefore, de¬
termined to pay the 9500,900 into
the state treasury out of his own
private fortune^ Gen, Bockner isthe

make the race for
He is a strong, ** able and
popular man.” *
If McBaniel has any popularity in
this district, it is a long ways from
this end of it. A man without mag¬
netism, ability, grace or even passa¬
ble appearance*, a record as the low¬
est grade of a mediocre; a mind
without sufficient breadth to grasp
the whole idea of a picayune at one
time; an accident in politics and a
blemish in nature, it is but a feeble
and tottering pace that he could run
in a race for congress. As for being
a candidate for United States sena¬
tor, such ludicrous audacity is in.
comprehensible.
Almost anybody seems liable to
come to the front in the present Btate
of Georgia politics, | but there is no
call to drag the dead out of tbeir
graves.
HENEVKB MAKES MTOTAltKS.
Editor Brown also has deemed it
necessary to make a denial. In the
last number of the Southern Alliance
Farmer in an article on the Northern
Livingston adjustment, he denies, in
effect, that bis paper “retreats or
retracts.” Of course, Editor Brown
can hardly mean that he never
makes mistakes. He would be a
phenomenal editor if he did not com¬
mit errors of judgement once in a
while, and it convinced is quite probable that he that had
if he were would
taken a wrong position he re¬
treat and retract. He would not,
we feel sore, insist upon maintaining the
a wrong position. This being have
case, there does not seem to
been any reason for his denial.—[Sa¬
vannah Morning News.
In the above paragraph the Morn-
ina News shows n Singular ignorance
of the character and ability ol our
condidate for United States senator.
What seems to the unitiated to be
blunders and contradictions, in
simply his way of forcing a crisis.
After theevisishis course nSay change,
but in this he is only following out
his plans made at the start.
He is “a phenomenal editor” and
will make a still more phenomenal
United States senator.
NO CONFERENCE NECESSARY.
The Griffin News is skillfully and
industriously grooming Editor
Brown, of the Southern Alliance
Farmer, for the United States Senate
to succeed your Uncle Joseph. Edi¬
tor Glessner will probably call a con¬
ference in Atlanta at an eariy Col. Brown. day to
—[Columbus carry out his Enquire designs a-SUiu. on
-•
We do notrbelieve a conference will
be necessary in this case. As soon
as we can get Col. Brown to consent
to announce himself, the thing may
he regarded as fixed. We shall then
write an open letter to Governor
Gordon requesting him to withdraw,
and showing so irresistibly the super¬
ior claims of our candidate that he
can not refuse to accede to this slight
request.
Conferences are very innocent af¬
fairs, but they have suddenly grown
unpopular and we will have none
of them in ours.

The census enumerators in Milwau¬
kee seem to have been in hnste to get
through their work so as to drop
the job, complaints being numerous
from all parts of the city that peo¬
ple hove not been counted.
Whole Squares Skipped.
Louisville Post.
There is complaint all over the city
about the neglect of the census
enumerators. This office has been
informed of whole squares where no
census taker has been seen. A gen¬
tleman who called on the Post this
morning said that at his house seven
persons been.missed, and at a
boarding house next door, where
forty people live, only two or three
names had been taken.
A Ridiculous and Offensive Census.
St. Louis Post Dispatch.
As a matter oi fact, however, the
population count has been made a
mere incident of the census business,
and has been sacrificed to a foolish
attempt to obtain a mass of informa¬
tion about the private matters of
citizens in the interest of sociological
statistics which must be stamped as
valueless and misleading at the out¬
set. The census work has been made
both ridicnlulons and offensive.
An Admission ot Defects.
Pittsburg Tress (Rop.)
It was not to be expected that such
an important work, of such a mag¬
nitude, as taking the census could be
accomplished without a lapse here
and there.
Lost!—An Enumerator.
Cincinnati Times-Star.
The census taker, who, it was sup¬
posed, would be very much around,
would, indeed, be omnipresent, has
hot been around or present at all iu
many quarters of Cincinnati. If the
city’s population is to be based on
the facts already learned between
now and next Wednesday night,
when the extended time expires, it
will make a mighty poor showing in
the eleventh census. Wh'athas be¬
come of the enumerator? ~-
