A PROrEsSUKOK AGRICULTURE
A great many farmers have a pre-
judice against that knowledge of ag¬
riculture which is contained in hooka,
and are very prone to deride “book
farming” and "book farmers.” That
this feeling is Just in many instances,
can not be denied, and is weH Illus¬
trated by the lack of common tense
contained in many of the articles
written for the farmers instruction.
Yet there is a great deal of f alnuble
information that can not be obtain *
ed elsewhere than,la written treatises,
and when this knowledge is com¬
bined with practical experience then
the most successful farming is
evolved.
How important, then, it is that
one who would teach farmers the art
and science of farming should be
thoroughly posted in all branches of
bis subject, and how necessary that
he should first evince a knowledge of
common firm principles if he is to
*>
advance useful propositions and de¬
ductions. Even a slight blunder in
well known matters will impair the
usefulness of such an instructor ever
afterwards.
But it is not a slight blunder which
the newly elected Professor of Agri¬
culture in the so-called Agricultural
College at Athens makes in an article
recently published ' In the widely
circulated Southern Cultivator un¬
der the heading of “Manure from
Heaven.” The title itself is an ab¬
surd if not revolting one—as if the
angels and archangels had gone in¬
to the guano business—while the
statements that follow throw into
the shade all the blunders and
misstatements ever made by all
authorssince Cadmus introduced the
alphabet and tho Egyptians got
on to the use of papyrus. If there is
one subject which the farmers of
Georgia have studied for the lust
twenty-five years it is the use of
fertilizers, and all .farmers use them
to some extent, principally in some
form of ammonia. Yet this Profess
sorof Agriculture claims in effect that
the water which falls in rain contains
not only all the soil needs, but
enough ammonia falls in Ueorgia in
one year to supply the needs of ul 1
tho vegetation on tho earth for
some time to como. How ridiculous
a fall of one hundred and fifty tons
of ammonia to the acre in a year,
is made fully apparant by the ar¬
ticle of Dr. L. B. Clifton, o Macon
savant and the State Entomologist
of Goorgiu, printed in this issue.
Yet in the midst of our laughter a
hush Jcomes and a blush of shame
arises when we realize that this is
the mnn chosen by the mock fuculty
of the farcical agricultural college
to teach the youths of Georgia
great and noble scieuce of agricul¬
ture. Derision is turned to
as we reflect upon the possibility
that this state of affairs is to con¬
tinue by the power of the namo and
the influence of the State university,
degraded to such a purpose, while
yet the opportunity lies open to
found an institution where real
knowledge and practical teaching
may be combined by men who love
the pursuit, of farming for itself and
will not preteud to tench it simply
for the salaries such pretense might
bring.
