STRADDLING A SUICIDE.
Htraddling in like any other habit;
a confirmed victim to itcan do noth¬
ing ei«e but straddle, evenwlien there
ie no necessity for it. To have both
lego oa the same aide of the fence at
the same time becomes impossible,
and no position is comfortable ex¬
cept that of riding the rail.
There really seems to be no reason
for not condemning the suicide of
the deposed tyrant of Chill, if one
feels like it; or for not palliating it
If one’s inclinations are that way.
In either case it could be made to
point a cheap end rendy made
moral, somewhat shelf-worn, but an
article that would suit some people.
Actually, there was no absolute
necessity for Baying anything about
it except in the news columns. Cer¬
tainly there was no excuse for the
quarter column of absolute rot in
which tho Atlanta Constitution in¬
dulges, ending by taking an entirely
different position from its beginning.
Here are the first two and the lost
sentences:
“ ‘Suicide is confession,’ said Dan
iel Webster in one of bis great
speeches. If it is not a confession of
anything else, it is at least an ad¬
mission of culpable weakness. *
* * * * Suicide is a bud
way of ending a career, but this man
saw in it his only escape, nnd he can
temptation." not be blamed for yielding to its
Iu a sentence, this is to say that a
man can not bo blamed for that
which is culpable!
We do not pretend to criticize the
morality of this declaration, or the
morals of the paper that makes it—
that would be n thankless job alter
its defense of Orth Stein, whom it
was first to publish as a worthless
scoundrel. But we protest that it
owes it to its readers to bo at least
consistent in logic and rhetoric in
points where no politics or policy is
involved and where the inducement
to slop over is so slight as in the
case of defunct Balrnaceda.
