—-—---
The people of this country would
like to see something done to de¬
cide theso puzzling diplomatic na¬
tions of Europe. They are getting
tired of seeing all the great powers
strutting about with chips on their
shoulders and looking for somebody
to come and knock them off.
And now sleepy old Spain, evi¬
dently excited by the antics of her
former dependencies, is said to be
on the verge of revolution. It might
be thought that the rumor of revo¬
lution is simply an advertising dodge
were it not for the fact tlmt the peo¬
ple qver there have never been ac¬
cused of enterprise of that sort.
The English press is assuming a
very pugnacious tone in its referen¬
ces to the disturbed condition of
affairs in China. Commenting on
the claim of the Chinese that foreign
missions have been absolute failures,
and! have only tended to foment re¬
volt, one paper says that “ft nation
which Occupies toward foreigners such
an intellectual standpoint ns this
can bardfy be brought to a deserva-
ble frame of mind by diplomatic re¬
monstrances.” Englishmen seem to
have forgot ton tho “intellectual
standpoint,” which they occupied
toward China in their encourage-^
ment of and shuro in tho infamous
opium Jtrafflc.

Canton, Sept 19.—The n»n»! stillness

the appearance of a mad dog there and
the usual excitement consequent to the
advent of such an unwelcome visitorto

During the time of the excitement
the dog chased Ramsey Sharp in a run

others to places of safe retreat. After
several shot* and much throwing of

load of shot into the dog and that
his career, and the excitement abated.
During the time of the excitement there
