Who Make Camp Duties
a Pleasure.
The companies of the First and the
Third Regiments of Georgia's sol¬
diery came in yesterday morning and
were regularly in camp at twelve
o’clock, there to remaiu until twelve
o’clock of July 26tb. Griffin extends
to all of them acordifU welcome and
hopes that their stay may be very
pleasant as well as profitable, know¬
ing them ali to be gentlemen who
thoroughly understood how to make
the most arduous duties pleasant.
In this they wiil always have
an illustrious exemplar in the
person of their post commandant,
COLONEL OEOHOE A. MERCER,
one of the most popular officers of
the State, as well as odb of the most
perfect, gentlemen. Enforcing all the
necessary discipline, he is yet courte¬
ous and considerate to the humblest,
private, with none of tbe little airs
of petty authority and'oeedl'vw su¬
pervision that are so galling in the
military martinet, and especially
among a citizen soldiery.
Cok Mercer’s first general
Dromulgated on the opening of
yesterday, is about half the length
of that of the commandant who pre¬
ceded him, yet it covers every essen¬
tial point. The character of the
commandant, as well as bis opinion
of the character of the troops whom
he commands, is well illustrated by
this closing colonel paragraph: commanding
“The confi¬
dently expresses the hope and belief
that every officer and member who
attends camp will realize the import¬
ance of the duty imposed, and will
so act as to reflect credit upon the
several commands and the State of
Georgia. The provisions be of the coercive mili¬
tary law can never so

Georgia Volunteer as the
generous emulation and high
of duty which originated and main¬
tained* them. A good soldier must
also be a good citizen. exhibition! Upon the
prompt aud unfailing of
the attributes and graces of the true

for the success of the camp.” provisions
