Siam has for many years paid tribute
to China, but only as a matter of usage
and convenience and it is now apparent
that China has determined to ussist
the Siamese against the French en¬
croachments upou their territory.
The interference of China will add a
most interesting feature to the Franco-
Siamese dispute and will probably re¬
sult in ibe modification of some of thff
demands of France as contained in her

ers, a prominent farmer living near this
city, while cutting wheat was caught
in tbe cyplo and had h»s legs horribly
mutilated. Tom Jones, a relative cut¬
ting wheat in an adjoining field, left
his 7-year-old son to watch the team
while he went to see Sowers. During
his absence the boy was thrown in front
of tlie machine and had both arms cut
off. At the time these accidents oc¬
curred the mother of the boy was in
town viewing tbe remains of a nephew
who had committed suicide after shoot¬ UM
ing a girl who had jilted him.
Suicide at the Fair.
Chicago, July 20.—Miss Emma Gar¬
rett, of Philadelphia, who, with her
sister, Miss Mary ’Garrett, bad charge
of the Pennsylvania Blind Children's
exhibit at tbe World’s Fair, committed
suicide by leaping from a window at
the Briggs house. She aud plunged head¬
long from the fifth floor, her brains
were dashed out ou the plateglass sky¬
light over the hotel office. Nervous
prostration, brought on by overwork in
preparing the blind children’s exhibit,
had unbalanced her mind. She was to
have been taken Lake, to Wis., a private for sanit&riura
at Geneva treatment.
