Charles Gonzales, the son of Prof.
R. J. Gonzales, known over ths
State as n musician and a director
of ability, bus gone wrong and ta
now ont hiding from the effects of
his wrong doing. He has since Jan¬
uary been acting as manager of the
Telephone Exchauge in this city and
ha* enjoyed the confidence of the
subscribers, besides many friends
that he has made by his pleasant
address. II* has lived in the eity for

Tbs village of Brooks Station is
now In the throes of the second ex¬
citement. that has convulsed the
population in the last few weeks.
Wlille they have barely recovered
from the recent assault upon a young
girl by two cowardly white wbeips,
they nr# treated to a second sensa¬
tion in the shape of two young white
boys being charged with sundry
crimes, and one of them shooting an
officer four times while restating ar¬
rest.
Col. Abe Steinheimee, n prominent
farmer and wealthy citixsn.who livea
uear tb#
was in tbs city yesterday and gave
the following particulars:
For a lopg time people around the
station have been missing boge,
chickens and other things, bat it was
not until recently that suspicion
rested on two young white boys,
Milas Holcombe and Will Cobb.
Warrants were sworn ont against
them on a charge of stealing and tbs
sheriff deputised I. W. Bishop to
serve them. Ou Thursday nght
Holcombe was captured and pluced
in custody, botCobb made bis escape
by ruoning over four men who were
engaged to assist the arresting par¬
ty. On yesterday morning he was
located on the barn of L. M. Cobb
and when Deputy Bishop attempted
to arrest him he opened fire, wound¬
ing the officer four times and making
bis escape.
Thore was at one a posse of thirty
or more indignant citisena organised
who began pursuit as soon as they
coaid secure blood hounds, an* it is
thought that if Cobb should be cap¬
tured he will softer at tbeir hands
for his cowardly shooting of Bishop.
When Mr. Steinbeimerleft, Bishop’s
wonods were very painful and as to
their serious nature, they were too
recent to have the matter fully deter¬
mined.
Young Iswly Ushers.
Here ta a new departure in a Pres¬
byterian church service: The Rev,
John E. Frey, the new pastor of the
Duryeo I’reabytei in a Mission in Cler¬
mont avenue, near Atlantic, in
Brooklyn, has devised a plan to stir
up more interest in the affairs of the
cliurcn among £be young men of the
congregation. A dozen or more of
young women have been selected by
the pastor to act as ushers, and they
are to make their apjiearancein that
capacity at a rally of the ChrisliaD
Endeavors at the church tomorrow
night. It is undratooa that they
ure all pretty as well os youthful,
and that each has already distin¬
guished herself for devotion to
church work. The ltev. Mr. Frey
said: “We are going to try this ex
peri meat, aa our young men do not
seem to tuke the interest in church
work which they should, and I am
trying to devise some method that
will increase their attendance. My
suggestion that some ol our young
woraeu should act us ushers has met
with much favor. We will give the
idea a trial at ail events. II nothing
satisfactory is accomplished we will
try something else.”
Children of the Street.
There is one thing which a healthy
boy loves almost as well as he loves
to be busy, and that ta to make a
noise and thrust his identity upon
others. Now the high-tide mark of
being busy, making a noise, and pes¬
tering or pleasing people wiih one’s
identity, that is what it ia to be a
newsboy. The newsboy is a clamor¬
ous, ubiquitous sprite, untidy, nim¬
ble, cunutag, coming always with a
halo of ringing din around him. He
buys three papers lor five cents and
sells tbeiu for five cents apiece. So
that every turee sulee he consum¬
mates nets to bis pockets a whole
dime. He ta found stationed along
tbe sidewalks and in the middle of
the streets. With an amnziugsung
fro id be risks bis neck and bones in
getting aboard of moving cars and
dropping off the clanging dummies.
He waves his papers in the face of
passenger or pedestrian, and often
makes a sale from sheer force of
personal magnitude.—[Californian.

It seems that for several months
past tbe Atlanta office of the Bel)
Telephone Company, to which office
the Griffin Exchange reports, has
been dissatisfied with the report of
the collections and remittances sent
from here, but each time that an in¬
spector was sent to look into tbe
affairs of tbe office Mr. Gonzales
would find sufficient cash to settle
and allay suspiciou.
Ou Thursday Inspector Frank
Walker, of the company, came down
and taking tbe uncollected bills of
the exchange usked Mr. Gonzales to
accompany him, and the first place
that be went was the Griffin Ice
Works. He presented a bill and was
imformed that it had been paid and
a receipt was produced. At this
Gonzales confessed that there were
many others that had been collect¬
ed for which no returns had been
made, bot stated that he could raise
the money to ssttle in full through
bis friends. The inspector was len¬
ient enough to allow him an oppor-
tnnify, but since 9 o’clock Thursday
night be has pot been seen by anyone
connected with the office. While the
inspector refuses to give tbe amount
ol Mr. Gonzales’ shortage, he says
it is small and ezpresses an opion-
ion that tho young man is more uu-
fortnnnte thau intentionally dis¬
honest. A bill was paid Gonzuiegon
Thursday ufternoon that was retut ti¬
ed to the office, the subscriber pay¬
ing him more money than the
amount called for. He left thechange
at the office, saying that it could be
seat tbe subscriber to whom it was
due.
Inspector Walker, when seen yes¬
terday, stated that he could haye
arruuged a compromise with Gon¬
zales, but that now it was out of
his power, as the matter was in the
hands of his bondsmen, The Amer¬
ican Surety and Guarantee Co., of
New York.
W. H. Ison will in future have
charge of tbeExchunge, aesisted by
bis brother A. S. Ison. These young
gentlemen are of irreproachable
character and their business qualifica¬
tion*) are such that tbe Exchange
will prosper under their management
and the service will be greatly im¬
proved.
Gonzales has not been heard from,
but his friends believe that he is only
in hiding until money enough can
be secured to settle his shortage.
