CONSCIOOS
From a Wok on the Heart Kccalvert
From Some Came Verter-
rtay Morning.
Yesterday morning at the Griffin
Marble Work*, 8im Pallord, a well
known man at the factory and an
ex-policeman, received an ugly hurt.
Report* concerning the matter are
conflicting and it i# almost impossi¬
ble to get at anything like the facts
in the case. The first report that
was given out was that bewnsdrnnk
and that he fell and struck bis bead
against a stone, thus injuring him¬
self.
Later developments show that be
was engaged in a discosalon with
Lee Penn, which became heated as
the discussion grew and finally
Ballard cursed Penn and
made a lick at him with a
stone cutters’ compass, which was
warded off, when Penn struck him
with a mallet knocking him senseless,
from which state he has never re¬
covered. Dr. J. F. 8tewart was
called in and attended him, but the
offair was Kept as quiet as possible
until about 5:30 o’clock, when Ral-
lard was placed in a wagon and con :
veyed to his home at the factory at-
tended by bis physicians.
Mr. Penn could not be seen last
night so as to refute these rumors,
and as Mr. Bailard was still uncon¬
scious, so that the exact troth could
not be ascertained.
A Sort Death.
Yesterday morning just after ten
o'clock Mrs. Harry 0. Pound died at
tbe residence ol Mr. H. C. Deane after
a lingering illness. About one week
ago Mrs. Pound was brought here
from Lexington, Ky., so that she
might have the care of her sister and
loving relatives during ber last boars
as it was realised that she could not
he spared to them for any great
length of time and while her death
was not unexpected, it was with sad¬
dened hearts and tearful eyes that
tbe news was received by her friends.
Mrs. Pound is better known in this
city as Miss Lallie Howdoin, wbu
married a few months over a year
ago and was jnst entering into the
age when life is sweetest Devotedly
attached to her husband and borne
surroundings, it is sad that her
young, blight life should be taken,
but with a bow of resignation her
grief stricken friends and relatives
accept the wisdom of bis decree.
The funeial will take place at four
o’clock this afternoon from the
Methodist church.

A Negro Drowned.
On Sunday morning, about 10
o’clock, Jim Hiroter, a negro man
about 24 years of age, was drowned
in the Bock Qurary pond, near the
factories. It seems that Hunter and
three companions, two white and one
black, who were younger than him¬
self, went out to go in bathing. He
made a dive from tbe embankment
and never came up again.
It was impossible to get any of his
color to go iu after the body,
although quite a crowd collected as
soon as tbe news was spread out, and
it remained for Lon Davis, a white
man, who works at the factory, to
recover the body, which b9 did be¬
tween 12 and 1 o’clock. His first
effort proved successful, for when
Davis’ head showed above the water
he stilted that he bad the negro in
tow, soon bis feet touched bottom
and he waded out bringing the negro
with him, whom be had grasped se¬
curely by the wrist.
The theory of his death is that be
either was seized with cramps or
that his head struck a stumper rock
with which the pond is filled, and
that bis death was instantaneous
in the latter case, and that he only
lived a few moments in case he bad
the cramps. Efforts were tnnde to
testore him by allowing tbe water to
come back through bis nostrils and
mouth but blood spurted
out instead, showing that
the vessels of the head had
become so congested that they burst
from bis long inundation.
