THANKS RETURNED
BECAUSE WE AliE STILL ON

'
Hard Times __ Are Our ... Own
.
,
It was a very good copprrearation
that returned thanks at the Baptist
church yesterday ytstenlny morning. moroiof?. The
sermon und prayers were excellent,
pointed nnd brief, while the singing
was a ten strike so far as the choir
was concerned.
The services began with “Old Hun¬
dred,” and the other tunes sang were
soch familiar ones as “Coronation,”
“America” and "Blest be the Tie
That Binds.” and thb congregation
joined iu with great vim. The 67th
and 68th Psalms were reed in An
impressive manner by Kev. Wood-
bridge, who also sent np an earnest
peean of thanks and praise to the
throne of grace.
Tbe sermon was a plain, simple
exprosition of tbe causes for our
thankfulness by Rev. O'Kelly, the
main cause being that we were born
in this land of the free, whereas we
might have been born a Russian, a
Chinaman or a Prussian. This is
not particularly to our credit, since
we can boast of having bad very lit¬
tle to do with our nativity, still it is
a supreme cause for thankfulness.
We should rejoice that the cholera
did not come to this shore, even
though tbe Parliament of Religions
did, und that while cotton is not ten
cints a pound neither is it fonreents.
The hard times haye not been nearly
so hard ns was anticipated, and
have been largely the fanlt of the
people in not- being satisfied with the
•piiere in which Providence " has
placed them, or for which the good
Lord has designed them. There
need be no poor in a country like this
if people would not persist in stay¬
ing in tbe cities but would go out in
the countrv where there is room
enough for all.
While there was plenty of causo for
positive thankfulness, there was a
sub-tone to tbe discourse that we
ought at least to be thaukful for tbe
evils that we have escaped which are
worse than those upon os.
At St. George’s Churcu.
There were Thanksgiving and
communion services at tbe Episcopal
church. Tbe sermon was a good
one and the offertory was for tbe ben¬
efit of tbe infirm clergy. The proces¬
sional hvrnh was “The Son of Ood
goes forth to war,” and the reces¬
sional, “Tbe church’s one founda¬
tion,” and the other hymns, "Come,
ye thankful people, rome,” and “Far
from mv heavenly home.”
