A Federal Italian Republic.
London, Nov. 28.—The correspondent
of The Standard at Rome says that in
the highest and most reserved circles it
is well known that the present dream of
the Vatican Is the establishment of a fed¬
eral Italian republic. This idea is the
only real explanation, extraordinary the correspondent lan¬
goes on to say, of tbe
guage lately speaking adopted the by mission the Vatican of France or¬
gans in of
and Russia with relation to the papacy.

OUR thanksgiving birds.
Hhw the Turkey end Ruffled Grouse Were
Rubbed nf Their American Names.
The French have an alliterative catch
phrase in the »tyle of our “Crazy Crycroft
caught a crate of criukled crabs” and slmi
lar sentences, and it run. thus:
Dldon dina, dit-on, d’un doa d'un dodu
dindon.
The English of it is, “Didon dined, they
my. on the back of A plump little turkey,"
which shows that Dldon was In luck, as
well as a man of good taste. But tbe last
word la rather fanciful or poetic, for the
standard French for turkey is “coq d’
lude,” or “cock of India,” and this gives
us a hint as to bow the American bird
came to be called tbe “tnrkey bird,” and
Anally the tnrkey.
Tbe first explorers of the American coast
were so firmly set In the idea that it was
merely a prolongation of eastern Asia that
only repeated disappointments in trying to
get through it and finally sailing around
the southern end of it convinced them that
it was a continent. At first they named
everything according to its resemblance to
something in India. The people they called
Indians, and the toothsome fowl they
called tbe Indian cock, and so it ia still
called in France. A little later they con
eluded that U came originally from Tur
key, and that name aticks to it. It ia too
late to change tbe name now, but we might
compromise by adopting the system of
primitive people (who name each creature
as nearly as possible by the sound it makes)
and call onr Thanksgiving bird simply
“the gobbler.” We could not very well
call tb« female the “gobbleress” or tbs
“gobblerine,” but we might, still follow¬
ing primitive methods, call her tbe “quit-
quit" or “queet-queet,” as the nearest tbe
human tongue can come to tbe sound she
makes.
Another American bird, the ruffled
grouse, has been robbed of bis native citi¬
zenship and named the “pheasant,” after
tbe bird of that name in Asia, but there
are so many varieties of the grouse that we
San well afford to spare one. The turkey,
however, is ours, and ours only, and really
ought to be renaturalized. J. H. B.

OfOcsr, Mad. a Good Tiling.
Nashvilije, Nov. 28.— The refusal of
Criminal Judge Anderson to allow
enormous costs growing out of trespass
cases has led to an investigation which
shows that there have been over 1,000
arrests of men and boys by one officer
and his assistants. The plan was the to
watch freight trains and capture
tramps that were bearing their way
through. The officer making the arrest,
the witnesses and the magistrate all got
fees amounting from |7 to in each
case. All parties convicted went to the
county farm and the state paid the costs.
There are now nearly 100 trespassers at
the county farm.
