The council meet ing Monday uigjit
was an unusually interesting one,
much business of importance being
brought up and disposed of. A mo¬
tion to levy a tax of five mills on all
city property was unanimously car¬
ried, all the members being present
and voting. Provision was made for
the appointing of a marshal for the
entire year,; beginning from the first
of February, at a salary not exceed¬
ing $15 per month. The selection of
a suitable man was referred to the
police committee. The number of
days for street duty was raised from
three to four, or |2 in lieu thereof
instead of $1 50 as heretofore. The
clerk was instructed to have the
railroad crossing in the western sub¬
urbs broadened. Trees will be set
in pin oo of those that have died;
bridges will be repaired and all the
streets properly worked. The coun¬
cil will meet again Monday night to
perfect work and plans under con¬

To-Day. A rwfttf ran at
tfaaw Mat Probable.
The citizens of Griffin awoke yes¬
terday morning to find the oity en¬
veloped in two inches of snow. The
feathery flakes began falling about
8 o’clock Friday night and continued
for. twelve solid hours. About 9
o’clock yesterday the sun made its
way through the heavy snow cloud
and the beautiful white mantle com¬
menced to disappear rapidly under
its rays.
On account of the briefness of its
visit no sleigh riding was enjoyed,
but tbe members of the young set
as welt as some of the older ones in¬
dulged in snow-balling. The indi¬
cations for to-day are that the
weather will be clear and somewhat
colder than yesterday.
