j i p t a ke p art tit the very-ganres they so
ptfoijgly criticised at Lome.
Foremost on tho list stands bullfight¬
ing. That will dig out in Cnba, togeth¬
er with Spanish rale. It will not be
tolerated by tbe Uni t e d Sta tes, and it
is net a «poit indulged in or upheld by
tbe Cubans themselves, wbo rarely If
ever visit the ball ring. It is character¬
istically e xport of the Spanish, for tbe
Spanish, by 1 bo Spanish. Sundays have
always been tbe great days tot snob
exhibitions. Tbe Sabbath is observed as
a holiday, a day of recreation, not of
rqst, evriy theater, music hall, saloon wid*
and place of ainosement being
Open.
Tbe “cofridas, ” or bnllfigbts, take
place at S p. in. aud are always attend¬
ed by tremendous crowds, -from the
highest official to the homhlest soldier,
each armed with bis bottle or two of
Manzanilla, wbich^he drinks steadily
through tbonfternoou, saving the empty
bottle to throw into tbe ring or at the
bpllfigbter, according to tbe style iu
which he dispatches his animal.
If the matadors kills his bail at the
first thrust, the public goes wild with
enthusiasm. Hats, jewelry, cigars, bot¬
tles, money, canes, are showered into
tbe ring. If, on tbe contrary, he stabs
the boll iu amlumsy fashion, tbe unfor¬
tunate matadore is hissed and cursed.
Bottles, stones and stioks are thrown at
him, and it often happens tbaf he is
seriously hurt by oue of these missiles.
Women do not attend bullfights as a
rule, bnt occasionally yon will find
some fair foreigner following the sport
with intent gaze and rapt curiosity.
The Cubans, as before stated, disap¬
prove of bullfights, and few go to them,
but spknd their Sabbath in the equally
humane gport of cockfigbting. Just as
bnilflghting is pre-eminently a Spanish
sport so is Jbokflghting typically low Cu¬
ban. One thousand dollars is but a
price for a gamecock with a bfiGiefit
record, end in tbe olden times when
the Cubans still had money enormous
Sams were bet on the result of a fight-
The wealthy Caban views bis game¬
cocks with the same pride that a
wealthy American views his lacing
■table, and tbe hird’S\pedigree is as Im¬
portant a matter to 'him as a horse’s
breeding is to tbe horseman.
Dueling is still much in vogue iu
Ogba, and gentlemen settle their differ¬
ences on the field of honor, On the
most trivial excuses quarrels are pick¬
ed, oards exchanged, weapons and plaof
selected Si and duels fonght. The rapier
pr is thorite weapon, and ft be-

grounds tbe objection is based.
Tbe native Cabans are, as a rule,
clean and fond of water. There is hard¬
ly a single private house to_be found
that has not a tank or swimming pool.
Tbe Spaniards, on the contrary, are
slovenly cleanly and dirty in their and M ha bits. JwjfJJ They

was kept up until tbe prizes were ex-
bansted, when a list was printed and
distributed for sale. Tbe drawing was
pabii labile and appeared to be absolutely*
fair.
Gambling is the ruling passion of tb«
Cubans, and gambling booses are to tx
found in every city and village through¬
out tbe island, At Havana there is*
very considerable number of such pub¬
lic gambling hells, Which daring the
last year have proved a source of no
mean revenue to the Spanish govern¬
ment, which imposed a war tax of 16
per cent on all moneys or bets ex-
©banged.
Tbere is an urgent demand in Havana
for one or two first class hotels with
modern improvements. Tbe establish¬
ments today Existing for the accommo¬
dation of visitors are totally inadequate.
Tbere are not enough hotels to bold the
swarm of tourists, speculators, adven¬
turers aud business meu who will visit
the island this winter, Boardinghouses
are not known in Cuba, nor are fur¬
nished flat 8 and apartments. Renta an
low, and most people live in their own
houses, with a strong prejudice against
"taking boarders.”
Tboee who do not keep house or live
is hotels rept rooms, which they fur¬
nish with primitive simplicity and havs
their meals sent in from a neighboring
caterer’s. The le way such meals are served
aud distributed is very curious. Some
idea of it can be gained by a glanoe at
tbe accompanying illustration.
Five or 'Six agate oops or dishes fit¬
ting stiogfy into each other are kept in
place by a curved iron band wbiob rnns
through tbe bandtee on tfie dishes and
hooks cn to the bottom dish on either
side. Each cop contains a jlifferent arti¬
cle of food—the first soup, the second
fish, the third roast, gqd so on op tq
©offee, the entire set of etops making a
complete table d’hote dinner. Tbe "con¬
voy, ” as this concatenation of agate
cops is called locally, is then snspeaded
together with a great many others to a
long wooden pole, which is supported
on a boy's sbonlder and left at eaob
customer’s door. Tbe fact that 80 or
more convoys are carried ont at one
time for distribution within a radios of
possibly five blocks or noniubnH tbs
inference that Cubans are lass particu¬
lar than Americans as to the temper¬
ature of their meals when served.
Children among tbe lower classes
dispense with dotting until they have
attained tbeir sixth or seventh year. It
is a familiar scene in Cnba to see four
or five boys aud girls, possibly of * mpaq
age average of 5 years, playing, romp¬
ing or fighting in a complete state of
nndlty, bat absolutely unconscious of
tbefr lack of clothing. In the-Coen-,
try, on the sugar estates, they do not
begin to feel the want of wearing ap¬
parel autil they are still older, and One
often sees big boys, especially among
the negroes on tbe plantations, catting
or ae iu the garb of primitive man.
