We bought the S H Deane Stock of Merchan-
chandise, which we are going to close
out at Wholesale Cost.
Besides the Deane Purchase we have bought
largely of Summer Goods in Baltimore recently, and
our Mr. J. L. Bass, of Rome, Ga., who knew nothing
of these purchases, visited New Yark City and bought
enough summer goods to supply the wants of a city
of 25,000 people. Well, we only have a population
of 12,000, more or less, and a little collection over two months
in which to sell this magnificent of summer
goods. Thaxton
Miss Harris and Mrs. would like to have
another Spring Millinery Opening, as their stock is
perfectly beautiful. Misses Camp and Smith would
- also like to have another Dry Goods Opening, to show
the pretty All-Over Organdies, Laces and Embroideries, the new
Lawns, Dimities, Silks, etc. Yes, we would
all doubtless enjoy seeing the lovely goods which we
have on display, but the time is too short. We are
overstocked on many t hings and our time must be
given to selling.
We have bought material to trim 600 ladies hats.
, It was bought at half price on account of the lateness
of the season, and will be sold for less than half price.
If your old hat needs new material, bring it up at
once and get it made over. This millinery stock must
go, if at give-away prices. New Lawns, new Dimi¬
ties, new Organdies by the case. A $1,000 worth of
Laces, Embroiderioc, All-Overs must be disposed of.

TEARING IT DOWN.
AT LAST THE OLD CITY HALL IS
BEING DEMOLISHED.
The Street Will be Graded, the Wood Yard
Bamoved. A Park Wilt
be Fat Out.
The work of tearing down the old
city hall began yesterday morning,
and in a few days nothing will be
left of this historic and famous old
building.
Few people believed it would really
be torn down so soon, ami many
were greatly surprised to see ite de¬
molition actually begin. It meet*
the hearty approval of everybody,
and while the council deservea some
credit-for the good work, the^ news¬
papers, who have been untiring in
their advocacy of the building's re¬
moval, deserve praise for its de¬
molition at last.
The present council can now get
together and make a united effort to
have the rest of the Unsightly old
shacks in front of the union depot
torn away, and they will have the
everlasting encomiums ot a suffering
public and be assured of election
next term,
Eighth street will not be opened,
but Broadway will be nicely graded
and the old wood yard removed.
VV e understand the railroad will
make a kind of a park extending
from Hill street to the the water task, ‘
sodding the ground in gram and
putting oat nice shade trees.
This will make a decidedly fine ap-
pearance bat as 00 m pared to the present
view, the people will sot be sat¬
isfied until the whole row of dilap¬
idated wooden hats shall have been
removed.

Dog Skins.
The secretary of agreculture notes
that dog skina are tanned In the west
and made into gloves. This is an
important matter to all those who
raise dogs in this country to be
slaughtered by the municipal police
of ourhitiee. It opens up a new
field of industry for our colored pop¬
ulation and others who now raise
worthless curs, hounds and mon¬
grels only to be led by a policeman
to what is seemingly worthless and
untimely end. They oanj be raiatd
and killed for their skins. The dog
law can new be handled “without
gloves” and you can oontinue to
handle other questions ever after
with gloves.
