the dead negro to have inflicted the
wound himself, accidentally or other¬
wise. The gun used was 10 or 13 feet
from the body when other persons

ON EVE OF ELECTION
IN BUCKEYE STATE
Chairman Dick Predicts Big
Bcpubiioan Plurality.
CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN QUIET
Besides a Full State Ticket and Mem¬
ber* of the LegislatureThereAre Full
County Tiokets to Ue Kleoted—11c-
Klnley Principles the Keynote.
OoLtrjruus, O., Nov. 4—The apathy
that has prevailed during the present
ca mpai gn fu Ohio oontinues up to the
eve of the election. The oampaiga has
been as quiet as it was short. While
the Republicans are confident of win¬
ning they fear that the small vote may
greatly red non the pluralities which they
expected on the state ticket and proba¬
bly make the result in the legislature
oloee on a joint ballot for senator.
The Democrats are depending on the
traditional results of the “off yean in
Ohio,” and opponents bring the great¬
est sufferers from the shortage. In the
having vote. They say the Republicans are
troubles in ail of the larger cities
on which they depend for their plurali¬
ties, that the rural districts are Demo¬
cratic and are not disturbed by local
difficulties as are the cities, and that the
aocidents are ail their way.
Local Affairs Come Up.
Local affairs enter into the election
tomorrow more thou usually. Besides
a full state ticket and members of the
legislature there are full oounty tiokets.
In Cincinnati the vote on the extension
of the lease of the Oiuoianati Southern
railway is a most important factor. In
Cleveland Mayor Johnson's taxation
theories and factional troubles compli¬
cate the situation. In Toledo the old
centennial controversy and in Columbus
“local option” and other complications
tional are diverting attention from both na¬
and scats issues.
The discussions have not been on the
nsnal lines of specific issues. The Re¬
publicans accepted Senator Hanna’s ap¬
peal to “Let well enough alone,” and
the Democrats replied “Let ns do bet¬
ter.”
McKinley Principles Keynote.
In his last appeal appeal to voters today.
Chairman Dick of of thi the Republican state
committee repeated the keynote of
•tonding by the principles of McKinley
and supporting President Booeevelt in
carrying ont the same. Chairman Dick
predicts a larger Republioan plurality
than two years ago and a majority of 11
senators and of 30 representatives, or 41
on joint ballot if a full vote is oast. Sec¬
retary Gilliam and Colonel W. A. Tay¬
lor estimate the reverse and Tsylor
gives further mi a plurality system of
percentages in the shortage ot the vote.
FIVE TIC KETS T n FIELD.
Kxpeoted Total Vote In Iowa Will
hot Exceed 440,000.
Das Moines, Nov. 4—With the ooid
weather predieted for tomorrow, it it
the general opinion that the vote for the
selection of state officers will be small
compared with one a year ago and
even lets than three years ago. There
are five tickets in the field—Republi¬
can. Democratic, Populist, Prohibition
and Socialist
The apathy which has existed from
the start has continned to the end.
There has been no prominent issue be¬
fore the state conducted and the has only speaking
campaign been that of
the Republicans, Philips, the Democratic candi¬
date, T. J. 1 being content with
a “handshaking ’ tour of the state.
The total vote anticipated will not eg-
oeed 440,000, as compared with 630,000
one year ago. There will be choeen a
governor, lieutenant governor, superin¬
teodent of publio instruction, railway
commissioner, judge of the supreme
court and members of the legislature.
All oon cede that A. H. Cummins (Rep)
will be elected governor and hie major¬
ity is estimated by the Republican state

Both men were woodcutters, having
employment at Mulberry Grove. They
had been living in the tame room for
abont a week, but during the last few
days, it seems, have not been on each
good term*, and it it stated, Phillips had
prepared to move his belongings to oth¬
er quarters.
The quarrel arose over the ownership
of a table, which Philips, olaiming to
belong to him, started to take away. In
the quarrel which followed, according
to the statement of Frank Carter, ths
man who has been lodged in jail, Phil¬

leaning (Garter), plotted np an ax which was
Philip*’ near the doorway and chopped
