SOCIETY GIRLS GIVING
UP MUSIS FOR BUSINESS
Preparing for Labor Shortage Occa¬
sioned by the War—Teachers
Themselves in Summer Schools.
I
Atlanta, July 10.—Society girls are
giving up the study of music and
kindred arts to take up business
courses in preparation for the short¬
age of labor occasioned by the war;
and are not only entering seriously
into their studies but are succeeding
in a financial way.
A fine illustration of this occurred
recntly at Elizabeth Mather College
when one of the girls decided to for¬
sake the study of music in order to
train for the business world. The op¬
position of parents was overcome,
and with the assistance of interested
instructors, the young student soon
completed the secretarial arts course,
and in four months’ time was able to
accept a positon paying $00 a month.
Others are following her example,
and the teachers themselves are at
summer schools in New York and
Chicago studying new educational
problems.
DATA ON TELEGRAPH LINES
This Activity Leads to Belief That If
President Seizes Wire System Sig¬
nal Corps Will Operate Them.
Washington, July 10.—The United
States Signal Corps is compiling com¬
plete data on telegraph operation in
this country, including that of private
and leased wires. This activity led
to the belief today that if President
Wilson seizes the telegraph lines of
the nation as a military necssity the
operation may be placed in the hands
of the Signal Corps. Strategical war¬
fare tending to delay action on the
resolution empowering the president
to take over the telgraph and tele¬
phone systems was resumed in the
senate by the opponents of govern¬
ment control.
