JETT-WHITE JURY
UNABLE TO AGREE
There Will Be Another Trial
of Famous Case.
DISXHARQED BY THE JUDGE.
Dominant Faction Was Sure of an Ac-
quittal—Only One Juror Is Thought
to Have Been For Conviction of De
fendants.
Jackson, Ky., June 19.—At 8 o’clock
this morning the jury in the Jett-White
case filed into the courtroom and Fore
man Richard Millard said:
“Your honor, we find there Is no
chance of coming to an agreement.”
Judge Redwine said:
“I will have to keep you gentlemen
together until Saturday night, unless
you get a verdict sooner. There is no
reason why a verdict should not be
reached in this case.”
Juror Millard said:
“One man has as much right to his
opinion as another, and he may stick
to it.”
It was believed from this that there
was only one man between the verdict
of guilty or not guilty, and it was con
ceded that only one Juror was then
for conviction and it was said that the
question of punishment had not been
considered at all.
Later the jury again reported it was
unable to agree, and shortly after 9
o’clock it was discharged, so that there
will be another trial. The dominant
faction evidently expected acquittal
this morning, and there was at least
one juror who would not so report.
The scene after the announcement
of the verdict was in nowise exciting.
Some started to clap their hands,
but were stopped by the court.
The guards took immediate posses
sion of the prisoners and they were
closely guarded back to jail. People
gathered around the courthouse in
knots discussing the case, but there
was no disturbance and no outward
sign of trouble. Jett and White arc
to be watched closely to prevent any
sort of communication. It is feared
there will be an attempt made to
either rescue the prisoners or to dis
pose of them, but this is impassible
on account of the guards.
Major Allen has the situation well
in hand. Attorney Byrd, after a con
sultation at 10 o’clock, made a motion
for a change of venue. Judge Red
wine refused to hear arguments, but of
his own accord changed the venue to
Cynthiana, Harrison countiy, at the
next term of court. Cynthiana is not
in Judge Redwine’s district. He sur
prised the spectators by at once order
ing the prisoners sent to Lexington
under a detachment of soldiers and ac
companied by Elisor Jones. They will
leave Jackson at 2 o’clock and be plac
ed in Lexington jail for safe-keeping at
7 o'clock tcnlght.
It is staled from semi-official sources
that the jury stood 11 for conviction
and 1 for acquittal in the Jett case,
and 7 for conviction and 5 for acquit
tal in the White case.
Fitzpatrick, the man who finally
stood out for the acquittal of Jett,
says he did not base his opinion on
the arguments of the attorneys, but on
the evidence In the case. He said
there is in his mind not only a reason
able doubt of Jett’s guilt, but there is
also reason to believe that he had noth
ing to do with the murder of Marcum.

WESLEY SI-CENTENNIAL.
Letter of President Roosevelt to Meth
odists of America.
Chicago, June 18. —In a special edi
tion of the Northwestern Christian-Ad
vocate issued to commemorate the bi
centennial of the birth of John Wes
ley, a letter from President Roosevelt
to the Methodist people of the United
States appears. In it the president
says: -
“To Americans the two hundredth
anniversary of t’ae birth of,John Wes
ley must have a’peculiar, interest, for
it is in our country that the great
church which he founded has reach
ed its largest development; and the
wonderful growth of Methodism has
taken place during the period of our
national life. The Methodist congre
gations played a peculiar part in the
history of our country and it would
he hard to overestimate what wo owe
to the early circuit riders, no less than
to their successors.”

“I have never spoken to anybody

AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY.
Annual Report Contains Much Inter
esting Information.
New York, June 20.—The seventy
eighth annual report of the American
Tract Society, made public today’,
states that in this society a consensus
has been reached as to what the Bible
teaches on many, if not all, essential
points, as held in common by the sev
eral evangelical denominations, in
printing it in various forms and many
languages, and in sending it to the
people in all parts of the globe. The
new year begins with a revenue from
rentals from the society’s building,
which will yield a considerable sum
available .as a sinking fund toward re
moving the burden of debt. The new
publications, distinct from periodicals,
brought out by the society during the
year, are B's in number.
The society is now publishing seven
periodicals, four in English, two in
German and one in Spanish. The ag
gregate circulation of these periodicals
during the year have been 190,000. The
colportage department finds among the
immigrant anarchists’ organizations,
infidel literature, bitterly hostile to
Christianity and grossly immoral, and
catechisms for the young. Colportage
among the immigrants in cities has
been diligeptly prosecuted.
The gospel truth has been publish
ed in 155 languages or dialects. The
demand for Christian literature in the
mission stations throughout the world
is greater than it has been for three
quarters of a century.
Over 1,500 missionary colporteurs
have been commissioned in more than
60 years of the society's activity in
the Mississippi valley to carry the gos
pel to tlie homes of the settlers in the
wildest regions of our country.
Out of 70,730 families, 9,150 were
found last year destitute of all reli
gious literature, 3,150 were found des
titute of the Bible; 12,370 families
were found that never vent to reli
gious worship. Over $250,000 in cash
have been sent to India for printing the
gospel in many of the varied lan
guages.
The society has expended in Its 77
yearsHn creating a Christian literature
for Turkey, including the Armenians
and Jews, and for Greece, $117,769 in
cash grants.
