MCRRtTT 1-H ACCIDENT.

Atlanta. Segit —-Commissioner W.

Injury and yaahaMF death yesterday
morning ia a-rwaniMriiiy aecideut at Val
dosta, where tSse anular commission
er had gone to spend a few days at
his old home. That he sustained
nothing but a bad bruise on the body
and a painfui :scratch of the arm is
considered miraculous by eyewitnesses
of the accident. Commissioner Mer
ritt returned to Atlanta last night and
is now at his home in this city.
Professor Merritt stated in reply to
questions regarding the accident that
he was out driving yesterday morning
■at his old home, was on his way to
Pine Park. His horse, which was
hitched to a light buggy, became fright
ened at a rapidly passing trolley car
and dashed on the track immediately
in front of the car, which was then
going down grade. The motorman was
powerless to stop the car before strik
ing the buggy. The front wheels
were shattered by the force of the
blow, Mr. Merritt receiving the inju
ries stated above. The horse was
unhurt.
Professor Merritt spoke lightly oi
the accident and. apparently carried
very few marks of his fall, “but his
friends will be very grateful do know
that the result was no worse than 1:
was.

shooting at John T. Heweli, Jr,
from ambush, but he was not struck
and the matter did not cause any
great alarm. Hewtllhas been in a
lot of scrapes in that county, and it
is supposed that some of his enemies
who have an old grudge against
him did the shooting.
Fellowing close behind this
episode, there was another row and
disturbance, with serious results.
It seems from reliable reports that
Tom Gay, a young man whose home
is near Haralsor, was drinking and
us ng offensive language in the
presence of ladies, and for this he
was reprimanded and “called
down” by Oscar Putnam This
brought on hot words between the
two men and it is said Putnam
slapped Gay in the face, when Gay
in turn drew a razor and made for
Putnam, cutting a terrible gash
across his throat almost from ear
to ear. It happened the edge of
the razor struck Putnam’s collar,
and this probably saved his life.
The doctors took some twelve or
fourteen stitches in Putnam’s
throat and he is in a dangerous con
dition, while his antagonist left as
j soon as the difficulty was over anp
has not yet been arrested.
Fearful Odds Against Him.
