mismanagement and extravagance
permeated the affairs of the American
International Corporation in the
building of Hog Island ship yard in
Philadelphia, according to the findings
. of department of justice investigators
made public at the white house to

examination into the corporation’s ex
penditures by board experts.
TBhe report says the officials at
tempted to justify their position by
saying they were forced to sacrifice
economy for speed.
An increase from twenty-ore mil
lion, the- first estimated cost, to sixty
one million dollars, was not accounted
for to the full satisfaction of the in
vestigators, says the- report.

hearts have been made sad here by
the disappearance of one J. W.
Stewart, who lived out in the Hollon
ville section during the past year.
A few days ago he was circulating
among his friends and acquaintances
here, offering to transport whiskey
from Columbus at sl6 per gallon. He
came from Columbus there, so of
course knew the ropes, and of course
was a good fellow, so quite a large
sum was placed in his hands in pre
paration for celebrating Christmas in
the usual barbarious way.
But the old story is told once more.
He disappeared with the cash. Sev
eral of his victims went to Columbus
yesterday looking for him, but return
ed none the wiser as to his present

D. P. Blake's Home is Destroyed To

CONCORD, Ga., Dec. 21.—The
home of D. P. Blake, at Pedenville
was destroyed by fire yesterday morn
ing about 2 o’clock.
When the family was awakened the
flames had gained, great headway, and
little of the furnishings were saved.
The fire started in the roof some
where and was most likely caused by
a defective flue. There was no insur
ance and the loss will be near $10(-
