and recommend that he be imprisoned in
the penitentiary during his natural life
This ends one of the n.order cases of this

Mr. George Seig, a citizen of Sumter

has just returned. He says that part of

and indeed every part of the State, was

rice to make as much money as possible
during the wild goose nnd duck season.
These Northern birds come and stay

seeking the gentle and healing breezes of

trees. Every day the trains overland

from the northwest ami east.

Tlicir Parade, Prize Drill aud Ball.
Tho Americas Light Infautry is an or
ganization that the city is prou.l of.
Their line appearance Friday afternoon
while drilling was noticeable, and a good
crowd assembled on the *quiro to praise
lendjirul applaud them. Under the com
mand of Cupt. Watts tho company has
attained a degree of proficiency that they
may feel proud of. In their new and hand
some uniforms the members are objects
of envy and admiration, and it can 1>.»
truly said that as us a body they are us
fioelooking a set of men as can .bo found.
As the ladies of the city so willingly
and ably assisted them at their fair, the
company determined to partly repay
them by giving a grand compliment
ary hop in honor of them, and Friday
evening, December 3d, was chosen as the
date. Tho necessary committees were ap
pointed, nil arrangements made, aud at
the appointed hour the beauty and elite
of the city were on baud to participate in
tho mazes of tho wnllzRand the stately
step of the q :adrill. Floor-masters
Hyatt and Burnette, and indeed all of the
company, made everything pleasant for
the strangers who were present, and no
troublo was had in making everything
run smoothly. Cupt. W. H. Clay kindly
gave tho use cf his hall in tho Barlow
House, and a right good ball it was.
Ail ochestra from Macon was on hand
aud discoursed sweet strains, and forth©
time being cares were thrown to tho
wind. Americus has astute reputation
for the beauty of its young ladies, and
it can mo it truthfully sustain -that re
putation. o
A great deal of interest was taken in the
prize drill, which took place just before
tho dancing commenced, and was con
ducted under command of Lieut. Burn
ette. Capt. Watts made tho boys a nice
little speech, nud theu the tug for tho
prize began, which, after a long and ex
citing contest, was “a warded to. Sergnnt
L. T. .Stallings. The prixe was a fine
seven iuch dropping red swansdown
plume. Mr. Will Jones has the credit of
making the contest rather warm for the
winner.
The company lias handled a great deal
of money, ns will bo seen by the report
of Treasurer Davenport below, and the
only*reason tho balance left is so small
because they have paid their debts.

wo are theirs. For kind treatment and |
innumerable favors the ywung people of ;
the city of Americus cannot he excelled. :
The ladies are polite, sociable, agreeable !
and very pretty, all ot which we can say
with the utmost truth
One noticeable feature of this c ity is
the entire absence of what is known in
the North ns “street gamins.” The hoys
of UiGtipity all appear to he gentlemen,
nnd we are glad it is so, for nothing is
more trying than to have a pack of
youngsters at your heels hooting and
yelling. May the young generation grow
up to be wise and good men, we do not
say great, for that is not essential to fu
ture happiness, and wc would prefer to
have them good than great.
/V hundred .other things crowd our
mind that we would say, but we will
leave them unsaid until a future time.
