Ml W. I,. UI.ESSNKIl, Editor. ■ ft ■ . "=g TUESDAY, DECEMBER 0, 1881. Another Richmond. The Talbotton Register anti Standard ha's the following com pl’mentary notice of one of our prominent citizens. We, in com mon with all our people, would like to sco Amcrious and Southwest Georgia represented in the Gover nor’s ofilce: It has been noted that Georgia has about twenty citizens who would consent to serve the people as Governor, and some one has aptly remarked that the most surprising part of the fact is, that nearly every one of them is able to fill the place. Among those more recently mentioned in connec tion with gubcrnational honors we find the name of one of Georgia’s truest and most faithful sons, that of the Hon. B. B. Hinton, of Amcr ious. He is quite capable and cfH- cicnt, having demonstrated his value to the Stato as a Senator in 1868-69-10-71-72. The legislation for that period bears testimony to ids fidelity to the true interests of the people, Mid of Ids ability to handle questions of both local anil state polity. It is said that lie will have a strong backing in South and Southwest Georgia. A ZaOBt Art. Wagon making in the South ap pears to be one of the lost arts. Nearly every one of tho plantation wagons one sees lias upon it the brand or mark of a Western maker, and each one represents from forty to seventy-five dollars sent from a comparatively poverty-stricken sec tion to another section rolling in wealth.—Ex. Wo have all the materials used in tho manufacture ol wagons grow- ing In our forests, and we sco no reason why our farmers and plant ers should send their money away from home for these articles when they can get just as good ones at homo. No place on the earth is better prepared to make good wag ons than Amcricus, but our people do not seem to know it. Right hero In our midst wo havo several establishments engaged in tho man ufacturing ol wagons, but it is not generally known. No wonder tho South is poor, when it has such magnificent rosouroos undeveloped. Tho Pension Fraud. Publio discussion on’that Colos sal job, the "arrears of pensions” net has taken a form so decisive that Congress will bo compelled to at least mako an effort to check tho shameless robbery to which this in considerate legislation opened the way. When tho bill was passed the man who framed It were made to boliovo that it would take but a few millions of dollars from tho public treasury—the maximum was $30,000,000, the minimum $7,- 000,000. The pension authorities now announco that during tho next two years not less thnn $235,- 000,000 will bo required to pny the vast and undigested claims, many of them purely fraudulent, trump ed up under the act. And btlil Another. Tho Perry Journal in namiug list of available raeu for Governor of Georgia, includes in it the name of Hon. Phil. Cook, of this city. If we don't get the next Governor it won’t be for want of number. Republican Senators must view with keen interest tho Sonatoial contest in Virginia. Should tho successful candidate be as hard in driving bargains as Mahono,Repub lican seekers of Senate ollicos will henceforth stand no chance. Ma hono alono claimed about one-half ofthe patronage. With a colleague he will take the rest. It would be a funny spectacle to bcc thirty-odd Senators led around by two; but the Kopubliban Senators will be in a minority if they don't submit, and what are they going to do about it? Jackson Newt: We have heard it said that a minister of a certain circuit, not a thousand miles away, will have to sell his household fur niture to pay his debts this year, owing to some of the churches not paying him for his services, it is said one of the wealthiest churches in the aforesaid eircuit, has paid him the whole amount of one dollar and a gallon of “sorgum losses” for a whole year’s preaching. Rather cheap religion, “don’t it.’’ The Rltrhf Day to Do It. » Th-- last Grand Jury of Pulaski county, in its general preset t.m nts, recomendcil "that these general presentments be published in each printing press of the county, pro vided tho lull dots not exceed twenty dollars each.” We presume the idea of that Grand Jury was that the general presentments were of interest to every person in the county, and the only way to give them general circulation was to have them published in all the pa pers of the county. The following unique descrip tion of the manner in which a Ber rien county farmer recently broke an ox, we get from the Alapaha News: “A gentleman in our town well known for his industry and manly deportment, undertook few days since to plow an < Everybody who lias had any expe rience in working the horned beast knows that they possess more cor trariness and hard-hcadedncss to the square inch limn all other ani innls combined. The horned horse was harnessed and latched to the plow without manifesting any un willingness whatever to perform the work, “go” was given, he kicked up his heels nnd waltzed around time or two on his fore feet, and came down with hi3 head towards the plow. Every effort to get him in position resulted in his perform ing n similar feat, nnd tho gentle man was pondering in his mind the propriety of taking to the fence when the idea occurred to iiim to whip the ox in tho face, wlicro upon the untamed animal ran backwards, dragging the plow guided by the plowman, and thus the work was accomplished, but go’and‘ha’wero entirely left out of the programme.” One ofthe United States Senate prerogatives is to have one ol Sen ator Anthony’s turkeys, of which ho raises large numbers on his farm. On Thnuksgiving season he sends one to every Senator and ex- Senator in the United States. Therefore, if a man is lucky onougli to bo elected to tho Senate ho is sure of at least one dinner every year so long as Anthony lives. As lie is well on toward 70 however, tho position will not be ns great a prize ns it has been, and icrhaps by-nnd-by politicans who ike turkey won't struggle ns fierce ly for nomination nnd election as they do now. Tub Savannah News with truth; “Since June, 1881, tho sum of$520,- 000,000 have been paid out lor pen sions, yet the farther wo get from the close of tho war tho larger be comes the number of pensioner nnd applicants, and the greater be comes tho amount paid. At the prosont rate of incrcaso it will soon take tho entire revenues of tho gov ernment to pay tho pensions; yet several thousand men who fought bravely in the Mexican war do not got a cent of the vast sums die bursed for pensions. Tho G uitcau trial drags its wonry length along, but excites lio partic ular interest from the public, ns the faots in the caso wero long ago known and the vordict of tho peo. pie made up. If through the tech nicalities of tho law G uitcau is ac quitted, tho law and tho tho court will grow-in contempt in the eye.-, ofthe public. A Marion county farmer, James Patton, made 448 bushels of corn this year on four acres of land. The ArtiAmntciir. Subscribers to art periodicals orenutur ally desirous of selecting tho best.
