News was received Saturday of tho death,
from scarlet fever, of Lillie, daughter of
Mrs. A. L. ltcilly, late of this city. Mrs.
Reilly has tho sympathy of her many
friepds in Amcricus.
Dr. li. J llc.id, of tins city, has been
appointed by the ministers of the several
! religious denominations as colporteur of
; the American Bible Society for this coun

We are pleased to learn that Capt. J.
j N. I kiss, Agent of the Centra! r.»nd at
; Montgomery, lias been promoted to the
office of Superintendent of the Port Royal
railroad, with headquarters at Augusta.
The Captain was at one time agent of the
Central road at this place, aud will be re
membered by our citizens as a genial and
courteous gentleman.
The New Opera House.
Work on tho new opera houso is pro
gressing rapidly, and it is expected that
it will be completed by the 10th oi Janu
ary The old plan of tho ceiliog has been
abandoned and it will bo nindo higher,
which has caused some delay. The paint
ers are at work on the scenery, and will
have it completed by the time the house
is ready. Tho house will bo opened by
Messrs. II. O.Bar.owand J. G. Reynolds,
with a dramatic and musical entertain
ment. They ure both old actors, having
g’ven a number of similar entertainments
in other cities. They will be assisted by
a number of young ladies and gentlemen j
of this city.

Three of our oldest citizens have lately
passed “over the river.” John R. Wor-
lill, Norfleet Hammond, and on Monday
last Mr. George W. Huckaby, who was
about G5 years old, and bad lived in the
county since ’32. A Primitive Eaptist,
he lived up to the letter of his obligations
as a church man. and always moved by
the true spirit of good citizenship, lie
died a* peace with God and man, uni
versally esteemed,

last week at the advanced age of 107 years.
He was the father of twenty-two children.

A Sudden Marriage.
The following, from the liawkinsvilel
Xews, will be of interest to our readers:
Hawkinsvillo enjoyed a marriage sensa
tion on Friday morning last, and it was
brought about in tho following manner:
On Thursday night, the 1st inst., Miss
Maybelle Clark, of Americas, and Miss
Fannie Faljcner, of Houston county, were
visiting the family of Judge John Heury,
in this place, and were called upon by
Messrs. Heury J. Sandlin and C. W.
Cooper. During tho evening tho subject
of matrimony was broached,and Mr. Sand
lin proposed to Miss Clark and '.vas ac
cepted . Of course the company regard
ed the proposition as a pleasant joke, but
the sequel proved that the contracting
parties were in dead earnest. After fur
ther conversation between Mr. Sandiiu
aud Miss Clark, Mr. Sandlin proposed
that they marry right thon and there.
There being no opposition to liis propo
sition, lie called on his friend, Charlie
Couper, to procure the Demise and a
