A curious and interesting exper
iment ims been tried to ascertain
the faculty by which animals find
their way back to familiar places
after being removed to long distan
ces. In order to prevent any
knowledge that migiit be obtained
by the direction or other condi
tions, a dog was placed under the
influence of chloroform, put in
charge of a conductor on a night
freight train, nnd sunt from Cin
cinnati to Somerset, Ky., a distance
of 100 miles. The condnctor re
ports that on tlie way tlio dog slept
soundly, except an occasional groan
like a "Christian in a whiskey fit'
In the early twilight of the morn
ing after the start, while the train
was taking on wood at a side track
eighteen miles from Somerset, lie
escaped from the caboose ami start
led off in a “dazed sort of way”
but when pursued ‘ gathered him
self up” nnd disappeared across a
meadow. Thirty-eight hours after
ward lie made his appearance ill
Cincinnati, having passed over the
distance ol'142 miles. Some time
afterward the same dog was put
under the influence of other and
his noso bandaged to prevent the
use of ills scent faculty. lie was
then placed in a wicker basket nnd
putting him upon an elevated traiii
he was taken southwest to Dan
ville Junction, east to Crab Or
chard, then northeast to a hunting
rendezvous near Berea. Here he
was kept in a wood-shed and close
ly confined over night. The next
morning he was taken out on the
farm and turned loose. Ho imme
diately started for home—not by
tlio way he iiad come but in a bee
line for Cincinnati. He bad no ap
pearance of being lost, but with
head erect pushed forward ns if lie
knew the way perfectly. He cross
ed two largo rivers and three steep
mountain ranges, and had to pass
by or through five towns, the cen
ters of a bewildering net-work of
roads and by-roads. He had nev
er been in that part of the country
before, nor within sixty miles of
Berea. The wind was not from
the direction of Cincinnati when
ho took his course and yet four
days afterward lie came to his mas
ter on the,streets of Cincinnati,
water-soaked and full of burs.
Now, the question is, what induced
flic dog to walk due north? It
could not have been memory, for
there was nothing to "remember,
and it does not seem possible that
it could have been scent, for all the
conditions were unfavorable.—

A Pennsylvanian says: A good
fumy years ago a man wlto had re
cently arrived from tlio Bermuda
Islands was sent to York county,
Pa., jail for some oflense committed
against tlio law of the common
wealth. lie had with him a few
seeds which lie had planted in tlio
rich soil of the jail yard. Before
the plants which sprang from the
seed readied maturity lie was dis
charged, and no one knew tho na
ture of them. They grew luxuri
antly, bearing fruit of a large size
and unusual appearance. As this
strange fruit ripened its color
changed from greentobrillinnt red,
and became an object of wonder
and admiration to all the inmates
of the jail. Mrs. Klinefelter, the
lady keopir, cautioned all tl cprii-
oners against eating any of the
fruit as she was sure it was poison-
ous, and besides planted the seed,
as she would endeavor to preserve
specimen* of it for him should he
return in time. Just when the l'ruit
was fully matured the Bermuda
prisoner revisited the jail and asl -
ed to see the plant. This request,
granted, he next called for pepper,
salt and vinegar, and to the horror
of the good lady, commenced to
eat of the supposed poisonous fruit
with a relish that astonished the
beholders. After enjoying the
strange repast, lie informed Mrs.
K. that the fruit or vegetable was
the tomato, or love apple, and it
would be found wholesome and nu
tritious.
