The Great Trial.
Ouitcau was as lively in court on
Monday lost as a cricket in a hot
skillet. He was badly scared while
being taken from the prison van
into the court room, so eager and
angrily did the crowd surge around
to get a glimps of him. On getting
into his scat, however, he soon be
came quieted down. .Several phy
sicians were then examined ior the
defence, but just before the exami
nation began, Quiteau popped up
to remark:
“1 want these expert witnesses
to pass upon this point where a
man is impelled to do an unlawful
act by a power which ho cannot
possibly control or ovcrrulo, and
by which his moral agency is domi
nated, is he to be considered sane
or insane?”
Dr. Kennon, of Chicago, admit
ted that when a man committed a
crime while acting under the delu
sion of Divine inspiration, and then
conducted himself preciselv as a
criminal would do, it would he pre
sumptive evidence against his in
sanity.
Quiteau, who had been quietly,
but intently following the witness,
here broke in, rather excitedly,
saying:
“Nothing of the kind in this caso
Judge Davidgo.”
“Well, we will see.”
Quiteau angrily:—“You nrc go
ing too fast in this matter. We
want facts, not your judgment.
Witness here understand one thing
right. The Lord injects tho inspi-
ration aud lets tiie mail use his own
judgment to work it out. That’s
just my case; that’s the way I got
the inspiration. The Lord don’t
employ fools to do Ills work. lie
gets the best material. There’s
nothing vulgar about this case. It’s
nil high-toned,” This produced a
general laughter that was quickly
suppressed by the court. One
witness was asked what he thought
of tho prisoner’s speech on “Gar
field and Hancock," nnd replied
that in his opinion it was a ridicu
lous nnd disjointed aflair. Quiteau,
who had smiled complacently when
tho witness carno upon the stand,
became very much incensed and
shouted out: “Well it was notauv-
thing of the kind; you don’t know
what you are talking about. My
speech received the endorsement of
tho best men in the country.”
Witness resumed by saying the
prisoner seemed to he a perfect
nuisance about the rooms, but was
interrupted by Quiteau, whostated:
“You were n nuisance yourself, I’d
rather lie hanged as a man, thnn
acquitted as a fool, nud I won’t
Imve any more of this kind of evi
dence.’’
Witness added, that he was a
laughing stock, so fur as h : could
see.
Quiteau became greatly enraged,
nnd turned to Scovillc, shouted:
“If you put any more of those crank
fellows on tho stand I’ll score you
again. "Twas a gront piece of im-
mdencc on your part to put Judge
Davis on the stand without con
sulting me.”
