The Lady of Lyons will be rendered at
the Opera House on Tuesday night, with
new scenery, new eostumes, and new
stage effects.
Lost week a negro living in the west
ern part of this county, made a bad mess
of it in trying to get married. He was
a renter, and as bis cotton erop had fail
ed, was out of money. A negro woman,
living on an adjoining plantation had
managed to save her money, so be offer
ed to marry her If she would furnish the
money. Sbo agreed to this, so they came
j to town, where she bought him a com
plete outfit of clothing and the license,
when he showed his gratitude by marry
ing some one else. This so enraged her
that she tore off all his new clothes and
threatened dire vengence.
As the funds of the Dramatic Club are
( used for charitable purposes, our citizens
this year 23,700 bales. The same dute ■ should see that their entertainment at the
lost year 211,7x9, making a loss lor 1881 of
3.020 bales.

Mules Killed.
During Christmas week a colored man
named Richard Dowdall, removed from
one farm to another nnd lmd a shed put
up for his stock. Saturday morning tho
shed fell .down, and killing two of his
beat mules nnd brenking the thigh bone
of another. This is a sad How to an in
dustrious man.

Through the courtesy of Capt. John A.
Cobb we ure enabled to give to our rend
ers the result of a number of carefully
conducted experiments with some of the
leading brands of fertilizers, cotton seed
meal, compost, etc. Coming just at this
season when guanos are bought, they are
valuable. Tho tests were made under
the immediate supervision of Mr. J. A.
Howard, and are for the use of tho Agri
cultural Department of tho State. They
will appenr in Mr. Henderson's report.
Six acres of average level laud, ns near
ly nliko as possible, were selected, nnd
tho following brands of fertilizers used
ono acre each to tho amount below
stated:

Each acre was carefully picked nnd
ginned to itself, and the weight of seed

recorded, and the ratio of liut to seed
cotton produced by each test ascertained.

Ah to the preparation and cultivation
of the soil the following treatment was
used: The land was turned over with a
sulky plow in the fall of 1880, Iu March,
1881, the rows were run off with a five
inch scooter and followed with a six inch
shovel to make deep tho furrow, and tho
fertilizers distributed at the rate above
stated. 1 lie cotton was planted on the
12th of April, chopped out May 5th, and
cultivated in tho usual manner with the
above results. It is here proper to state
that owing to the unprecedented drought

The only county matter brought to our
attention is that of tho jail. We would
recommend that a stove, or other suitable
heating apparatus, be put in the jail for
the comfort of the prisoners. Wo have
been informed that the prisoners suffer
very much in cold weather, and, in some
instances, that serious sickness lias been
entailed upon some of the prisoners from
this cause.
We have had a largo amount of Bills
before us, and have examined a great
number of witnesses. Wo have found
twenty-three (23) True Bills. In ten (10)
cases we found no bills, nnd hnve laid
on the table six (G) cases to bo caried
over to next term of tbo Court, making a
total of thirty-nine (30) bills. We trust,
that tbo above huge number of bills
brought before us, will satisfactorily ac
count for our uot being able to adjourn
until this evening.
There appearing to this body that thero
is a vacancy in the office of Notary Pub
lic and Ex-officio J. I\ of the new IGlli
district, nnd upon recommendation of
some of the citizens of that district, wc
recommend Mr. J. E. Thomas as a suita
ble man to fill that office.
