Though late in the
to the many friends of the family.
I suppose it was tho most superb
'‘housewarming” ever given since
Lorenzo di Medici opened his ar
tistic palace at Florence.
Indeed, as the magnificent Ghi
berti doors from Florence (copied
by Hnrbedienne of Paris, exhibited
in 1878) swung open for me, I tell
transported to that noble rnedheval
time when the sincere ami the beau
tiful walked with tho archi
tect and the painter. I entered a
square vestibule, surrounded with
architraves of pale yellow marble,
and before me stood n superb mala
chite vase, occupying the centre of
the room. Thiec mose bronze
doors then opened into cloak rooms
and dressing rooms, and I entered
n vast hall, Yvhicli extends the full
height of tlio house, Yvith galleries
pn each story. Square columns of
a deep red marble, witli rich napi-
tals of bronze, support the galler
ies. Tile balustrades running
round them struck me as heautlfii
works of art on which figures,
Yvroatlis, and garlands shine in
brass against a background of
bronze. A richly carved wainscot
of English oak surrounds the room
A great wood fire burned plente
ously in a bounteous fireplace,
which reached to the ceiling. Here
brass ornaments, garlands Ac.,
against a dark background recall
the work so emphasized in France
in the days of Louis XIV. Bronze
female figures, red marble, every
thing superb!
Mrs. Vanderbilt received in the
saloon, Yvhicli looks out on Fifth
avenue, and the room is simply a
casket of jewels It is dazzling.

Mr. Vanderbilt seems always to
be apologizing for being so ncli and
so generous. He is singularly un
pretending, as are all his family. I
know no one who does more good
in a quiet way, and it is therefore
fitting to sue him in a palace such

The Supreme Court has reversed
the decision of tlio court below iu
case of W. C. Singleton vs. 8. W.
Railroad. It will be remembered
that Mr. Singleton, who now lives
at Tazewell, got on the pay train
wbilo it was standing on the track

Howard. Jlo had the necessary
ticket, and simply made a mistake
and got on the pay train believing
it to be tho accommodation pass

ofT, and in getting off the train lie
broke Ids leg. Mr. Singleton sued
the railroad in Talbot Superior
Court in 1880 and was awardee) a
verdict of $14,000 damages. The
Supremo Court reversed this de
cision on the ground that the dam
ages assessed was too much, and
tlio case was remanded back to the
Superior Court of Talliot county.
In the spring of 1881 the case
again came up, when the verdict
was $5,000. The railroad again
carried it to the Supreme Court,
and it lias again been remanded
