IT asM nrrardins to the dlrcc As of considerable interest to our commercial readers we give the following synopsis of the last monthly circular of Messrs. Smith, Edwards A Co., of Liverpool, Al luding to the situation of the cot ton trade they say: “The prospects of our market have been very keenly discussed of late in connection with the ex traordinary and unlookcd for col lapse in American receipts. The great feature of the month has been the apparent drying up of the American crop, leading,as it has done, to a large reduction in cur rent crop estimates. At tho end of the jenr the favorite idea in this country was six millions, though ! in America lower figures prevailed; ' but so bitter is the memory of Inst | s nson that the public could not he persuaded to believe in .o sVort u i erop ns lue Americans constantly asserted. “Now, however, it is clear to I every one that the very had ae- i counts which we received iinuea,- ino|y since lust Septeinlici' lime had only li.o much Inundation in j luei, uml even the liureuu estimate 1 of 5,!tOO,(IOIi Imles, which we all . thoiiglit so uh.urd at tile time, had j at least some semblance to truth. i We have seldom or never seen so startling a collapse in figures as was witnessed this month. Various 1 explanations are tendered to ac count for it, such ns Imd roads, speculative hold by planters, etc., hut we must admit that the mi- aniinuiiH opinion in America, so lur as we iindcrsiuiid it, is that ex haustion of supply is the true ex planation. Tile general opinion ill the South now is that the yield will not exceed 5,500,000,11 lew in New York udliere to 5,750,000, but others go as low as 5,250,000. We venture no opinion, except that tiic scale of receipts during Janu ary looks more like 5,500.000 than any other figure. Not less wonderful than the collapse of receipts is the perfect indifference with which it is rc- 'nrded. Had any one in December jeen asked to predict, the effect of such smnll figures, lie could have confidently prophesied a sharp advance; but a series of events, which we have already glanced at, chief among which is the disturb ance of the money market and flic dull state of trade, neutralised for the present the great reduction in our probable supply of cotton. “The largo movement of crop ut Bombay, and the henvy shipment to this country, also tend in the same direction, mid it is coming to be Icit tlmt there will he 110 severe scarcity even with a crop of five and a half millions, while live mid three-quarter millions will yield sufficient.’’ THE BEST OF ALL LINIMENTS POE MAN AND BEAST.
