The Pension Outrage.
islimnclllo.
The. vote of Senator Brown
against making so pure a man and
so good a Democrat as Neil Brown
reading clerk of the Senate docs
not commend itsell to our judg
ment. He may be able to give a
satisfactory reason for it, though,
as yet, he 1ms failed to do. But
this is a small matter in comparison
with the stand he takes on the in
famous pension-arrears swindle
He endorses it in its fullest scope,
and almost every other Democratic
Senator is in the same condemn
ation. It is an outrage to the people
that they ought not passively to
hear. This whole pension business
is un insulferablc and constantly
increasing burden on the tax-pay
ers of tlie country. It is shameless
in its discriminations, insatiable in
its exactions, and infinitely corrupt
in its methods. In our judgment,
the Democrats who vote to endorse
this infamous system, that threat
ens to bankrupt the Government,
ami indefinitely perpetuate the
public debt, arc actuated by no
higher motives than that of pander
ing to the soldier clement of the
Federal armies in the lute war, witli
a view to the elections of 1884. It
is utterly inexcusable. If the De
mocratic party cannot win success
j without abandoning principle, and
‘ buying up this element witli the
Is It merely a Fashion 1
Tho blitter records mado by a
number of Jersey cows in America,
has given a fresh impetus of the
interest in that most interesting
breed of cattle. Think of daily
yield of more than three pounds of
butter from tho milk of one of those
gentle, docile lit-.lc pets—and such
butter i
There is no longer a blind ad
herence to black points, wax-like
horns—they are no looger grade
to nun-cssentials—to the neglect of
essentials. It is no lougur u lucre
fashion to breed Jerseys in prefer
ence to other thoroughbreds, but a
business, founded on sound princi
ples and solid business consider
ations of profit.
A butter yield of tlirce pound
per day of Jersey butter means,
even on our market, $1.50 per day
from the sale of butter or, suppos
ing this to continue for two hund
red days, and we have an income of
$800, which is ten per cent, on $3,-
000. Tho buttermilk from such a
cow will nearly pay the cost of her
keeping. Besides, every heifer
calf from such a cow will be worth,
when six months old, somewhere
between $200 and $1,000. Is it
not natural that the owner of such
a cow should decline to sell tier at
almost any price ?
Such a cow is quietly ruminat
ing within less than two miles of
where we write to-night. We allude
to Mr. Wade’s famous cow, “Tend-
la.” Tho herds of Mr. J. B. Wade
anil Judge John L. Hopkins can
lm*-d|y bo surpassed anywhere, ami
yet it seems difficult for our people
to realize the fact.
It is the fashion for onr people
to send Northfor fine stock, and, in
deed, for everything else; blit if
they really understood their own
interest, and the fuct that every
animal brought here from the North
must run the gnnntlet of acclim
ation, they would prefer paying
double the price for an animul al
ready acclimated rather than run
the fcniTul risk of acclimatising nn
portation from a more northern
latitude. Wc advise all who are
in roach of a thoroughbred Jersey
bull to coRMAense.at once grading
up their common stock by using
their best cows as a basis of the
Jersey cross,
Tim great superiority of the
Jerseys as butter produces no
longer admits of a question.

.As sudden as a clap of thunder,
without the least, premonition,
Iloscoe Conkling is brought from
tlie retirement he has undergone
for the past year, so mncli to the
satisfaction of tho American peo
ple. Friday the President sent to
tho Senate the nomination of Ros-
coe Conkling, ot New York, to lie
an Associate Jnstice of the Sir-
preine Court of tlie United States.
This was ^surprisingaction on the
part of tho President to everybody
at the capital, as we read in the
dispatches that it was totally un
expected, save by a very few Sen
ators who had recently received an
intimation of it from the President,
but who kept tlie secret inviolably.
The nomination seems to have
greatly pleased the faithful, as they
wanted to take it right up as soon
as sent in, and put it through with
something oi a hurrah. But this
was unsuccessful. There was one
Senator who thought Itoscoc’s
nomination might just as well take
tlie usual course, and this was
Senator Hoar, wiio took the floor,
and warmly said that while he con
ceded! Conkling’s great ability,
and that no man since Webster
had surpassed him in intellectual
force, he believed that Conkling
had used ids powers for bad pur
poses, and lie did not believe .biin
to be honest. His elevation to tbe
Supremo bench, said Hoar, witli
great excitement oi manner, and
pounding his desk by way of em
phasis, would be a disgrace to tho
judical ermine, and lie therefore
interposed an objection to prevent
tlie consideration of the nomin
ation, and insisted that it should
take tlie regular course of refer
ence to tho judiciary committee.
A single objection being sufficient
to prevent immediate considera
tion, the nomination was accord
ingly referred to that committee
under tho rules, without an oppor
tunity for dobate or any reply to
Mr. Hoar’s remarks.
Well, this is high office for sucli
a man ns the Senator from Mass-
nchusotts described, to occupy.,..
But there Is consolation in it for
tho Sontbcrn people. It places
one who never lost an opportunity
to fling insult into the fnce of the ,
South where lie can throwno more.
May lie keep ills office and fatten
on it. May his heart and purse
fcol satisfied, and continue satisfi
ed until a green old ago comes on
when tlie gout or other inflrmitics
will prevent his accession to any
offico tiiat will a fiord tlie least
