When newspapers arc not called for It I* made he doty of Postmaster* under the law to notify tha proprietor* of thU fact. Cards, already print* *d, are furnished on application to the Postmaster, whose only duty will be to fill out with the name f the party not yetting the paper. Three colossal cranks are at large in Northern Africa, caeli claiming to be the long-expected Messiah of Islam. Two are harm less, ami ono is on the war path against the Kgyptains, with blood in Ids eye. Doubtless the Sultan will soon have their heads. There is a slight eruption among the'Nationals. One of the lenders has accused Jesse Harper of being a traitor to the party. They need not be alarmed on that account. It is all the better for the party, if Jcsso has proved false. The ec centric Sucker will <1o the pnrty more good ns a traitor than ns a friend. Nincty-flve bills before the pres ent Congress call tor an aggregate appropriation of $11,000,000 for public buildings in various cities, large and small. Some of these buildings are needed nnd some are not, nnd in nine eases out of ten the appropriations asked are ex- travngnnt. The Government owes it to the people to refrain from wasteful liberality in the building business. That people must be most pros perous who produce for themselves the articles they consume, especi ally when they have lands well adapted to such productions, nnd the sooner tills fact is appreciated the better it will 1>J for those inter ested A mericus Recorder. Yet our amiable friend would have us send to foreign ports for the foreign fabrics and cotton goods necessary to clothe him when they can he produced just a* well at home.—Macon Telegraph. No, we would noi, send to for eign ports for any tiling which can lie produced just ns well at home, lint we do opi>ose the system of political economy called protection, which makes us pay double for ar ticles which can just ns well be pro duced at home. We would have our people free to buy from wjiom they chose, nnd not be compelled by law to purchase their goods from certain parties at more than the legitimate price. Our fnrmcrs have not made it profltnblu in rais ing cotton, but out amiable friend ol the 'Telegraph, who is so inter ested in tlie niuntifnulurers of cot ton ties, lias not yet suggested that a law be passed compelling the cotton manufacturers to buy enttop from our farmers nt an in creased price. FROM OUR OLD FRIENDS. At a meeting of the Illinois Press Asssoeiatien, held at Spring- Held on the 15th, the following res- olution was adopted: Whereas, W. L. Glcssncr, late of the Clinton Register, and for sev eral years an honored nnd respect ed member of this association, has removed to the state of Georgia, nnd ha* purchases the Americas Recorder: therefore, Resolved, That the Illinois Press association reccommcnd Mr. Olcssner to the press of the state of Georgia as an honest, faithful and competent editor, anil a cour teous gentleman. A Sleeping Tree. A Western writer tells the story, which no other would be likely to do with equel felicity, of a tree-re- cently brought from Australia to Nevada, “which has been in the habit, at night, of going • to roost likothe chickens. The leaves fold together, and the ends of the ten der twigs coil thcmselven up like the tail of a well conditioned pig- After one of the twigs had been stroked or handled the leaves mo v e uneasily and are in a sort of mild commotion for a minute or more. GnrtrcU’s tlius assuming command of the forces lie lias recruited. f'oiikling uii the licnrli The nomination of Mr. Conkling by the President ns Judge of the Supreme Court was a surprise to the country, ns it was supposed that he would not accept a position which liars him Iroui the political arena. The Rome Courier asks. “How is a Georgia's tenth Congressman to be elected, in tlie event of the passage of tlie apportionment bill?” and says: “ Wc hope that tlie Gov ernor will not be inliiicnccd by tlie consideration of a few thousand dollars of expense to the State to refrain from calling tlie Legisla ture together jn extra scsion. Tlie disticts nt present arc badly shap ed,especially the Fourth nnd Fifth, which arc very long and narrow, und the shape of the Seventh would be much improved by straighten ing its cpstcrn line. Wc favor prompt redistricting for another reason, because we do not want a Democratic State Convention held for tlie purpose of nominating a State ticket, to be distracted by the contention of half a dozen or more aspirants for a Congressional nomination.” In the last thirty years the House of Representatives of the United States, has increased its membership from 238 members in 1850. to 325 in 1880, a gain of 87. As tlie number of members is in creased the dillleultv of Legisla tion is increased, for as every man has his own views to venlilate, fi nal votes on all important ques tions will be delayed. Rut as it lias oltcn been said that we have too mm ii Legislation, it may be considered that anything will be beneficial to tlie public that will tend to check it. Tlie suggestion of the Now York Jterahl that tlie National Representatives he in creased to 1,000, was possibly in spired by this view of the case.
