Attempt to Break Jail.
Mcntczuuia Weekly.
Ah sheriff Gilmore, who is one of
the most vigilant officers in the
State, unlocked the onter door of
the jail on Monday morning last,
he observed that tilings on the in
side were not ns lie left them. He
immediately locked the door again,
went, on the streets, summoned a
posse of citizens and returned.
The prisoners had in some way ol>-
tnined a flic, Died into a huge
staple, and opened the door of their
cell. They had also broken u large
forty pound bar of iron from above
the window, with which to fell tbo
sheriff when lie came in. But ns
luck would have it the scrutiniz
ing eyes of the shcriti kept him
from being murdered. The prison
ers seeing their plans thwarted, con
fessed all, and promised to never
again make an eflort to escape.

Mr. W. S. Tucker lias raised 6,.
000 cabbages this season on his lot
here in town. These arc worth,
at lowest figures, $500. The entire
cost of labor and fertilizers is
about $180, leaving a clear profit
of $320 from about a half acre.
Yet our farming people kcop cry
ing out “hard times.” Now it
can’t he said, “oh lie has got a rich
spot of ground.” The lot in ques
tion is a bed of wliito sand, too
poor of itself to sprout cow-peas,
that is, before Mr: Tucker com
menced to enrich it. He hopes to
ho able to exhibit some forty
plunders this season.

Borns on His Bead.
New York, Feb., 25.—Among
the passengers who were landed at
Castle Garden from the steamship
Wacsland, from Antwerp, to-day,
was Leopold Paen, a man about
45 years of age whose head was
ornamented with two well develop
ed horns. The horns were as large
as those of a yearling calf, and
projected from the forehead, one
on each side, near the temples.
The mnn attracted much attention
as lie walked about the garden and
exhibited his singular appendages.
There were about 400 people in the
building, and Mr. Paen caused
loud laughter by his strange antics.
He bowed his bead and dashed
furiously at the people, after the
manner of a wild Texas steer. Mr.
Daen was unable to speak English,
hut through an interpreter he told
a reporter that the horns began to
show themselves when he was
about eight years old. They grew
until he was eighteen or twenty
years old, when they attained their
present size, and censed'to grow.
Mr. Daen's ease was investigated
by several European physicians
and surgeons, with the intention of
ot ascertaining if the horns could
be amputated. It was decided
that amputation would be danger
ous to his life, as the appendages
wore found to he composed of a
bony substance, and, in fact, a
part of the skull itself. He was
accompanied to America by his
wife and son, the latter a lad not
yet in his teens. One of the
Castle Garden officials who exam
ined the hoy’s head said that he
could plainly feel under the skin
the points of two horns which hud
recently commenced to develop.
A Desponding View.
The Now Orleans Times-Dcmo-
crat takes a very desponding view
of the present situation of the
Mississippi valley. It says:
Coming upon the heels of a year
of agricultural misfortune, this in-
undation is crushing and disas
trous beyond all words. The whole
valley from Cairo down to the
mouth of Red river—a tract eight
hundred miles in length and of a
width varying from one to twenty
miles—this enormous territory, to
gether with the bottoms of the
Ohio, St. Francis. Yazoo, Sunflow
er, Ouachita, Black, Tensas, Ma
con and Bartholomew—not to men
tion a dozen smaller streams; all
this vast territory is now inunda
ted to a terrible and ruinous ex
tent and is destined to suffer still
more severely within the next few
weeks.
We realize It fully, now. We
no longer attempt to lull our fears
ith uplifting hopes and cncour
aging forecast. The disaster is un
mistakable, wholesale. Surround
ed by sullen, angry waters; their
fields flooded; their live stock
drowned or starving; their pros
pects gloomy and clispinting be
yond deseiiption, the hapless dwell
ers in the alluvial belt, from Cairo
eight hundred miles southward,
have little or nothing to do save
to pass in review the melancholy
panorama of their fate.

A Sew Industry.
There is an Industry In the
mountains of North Carolina and
East Tennessee that is perhaps
known but to few and is probably
found in but few sections ol this
country, viz: the collection of Ivy
roots. Tho roots aro shipped to
Philadelphia and Boston, where
they arc used for making door
knobs and pipe howls They arc
found principally along the line of
tbo Cranberry Branch Railroad
nnd in the vicinity ol Roan Moun
tain, where they grow in great
abundance and attain an enormous
size. Oour informant states that
recently a root weighing 800 lbs.
was dug from the ground and
shipped to market. Tins is suppos
ed to he the largest ivy root ever
found, but roots weighing from T5
to 150 pounds arc frequently found.
The collection of these roots Ims
grown into quite an industry, and
a large number of poor farmers arc
thus engaged and make a fair liveli
hood. There is a constant demand
for the roots and good prices arc
paid for them by the ton. The
wood is said to he very valuable
for the purpose for which it is
used.
