Cotton, cotton, cotton. That
has been a f elf-imposed stumbling-
block of Lite southern planters.
They grow too mucli cotton. For.
rests ami unelcr-bush yield to the
ax and the ilery flames to grow—
cotton. The planter dreams of
cotton; bends all his energies,
spends all bis money, borrows
money and gets into debt to grow
cotton. This is all wrong. It
has been a disastrous process for
tlie south, whose soil is capable of
producing tbe finest food crops.
Tbe concentration of all energy
and money on cotton planting lias
produced enormons crops of this
staple, but nho that carefully ex
amines tbe subject can deny that
the southern people would be more
prosperous, would be free irom Itar-
rassing debt, if they raised four
million of bales of cotton instead
ot six millions, devoting tlie kin
etic energy necessary to raise the
extra two millions of bales to the
production of food crops—food,
indeed, absolutely necessary for
human comfort, and which i* large
ly purchased in the middle and
western states at a great expense.
Sergeant Mason.
At the time Sergeant Mason’s
counsel, Bigelow, was before the
District Supreme Court Wednes
day with an application for habeas
corpus, Mason was on tlie way to
the Albany penitentiary, but this
was not known at the court house.
The counsel visited tho barracks
in the forenoon with a Notary and
took Mason’s signature to tbe
necessary papers. Immediately
after their departure Mason was
started on bis journey. This hasty
action lias created considerable
feeling and it is claimed that it
wa* taken to avoid the servico of
the habeas corpus papers. Mr.
Bigelow is moving actively and
and has interested tlie Secretary of
War, who promises to look into
the matter. Mason arrived at tlie
prison Wednesday. The Balti
more American lias started a five
cent subscription for tbe benefit of
Mason’s family which is meeting a
liberal response.
