. "Wc Need Rain."
That was the sage and truthful ie-
mark wo made last Saturday night, as we
slowly climbed into onr olegant four-
horse pbicton, prcpjfratory to being haul
ed to our mansion on College Hill. Yes.
w-e needed it then, and our brain was
clear and our eyes looked deep into the
fathomless future as if to solve tho prob
lem of whether wo were to have it or net.
Twas not to be," onr eyes replied; and
we lifted up our voice and sighed. Visions
of drouth aod dead hogs and distress filled
our head, and we went home murmur
ing, “we wish we wore dead." Bnt is
perhaps wise to remark hero that editors
can lie about at: fast as the oldest inhab
itant w hen the weather is concerned, for
within twenty-four hour* ft was raining
us though it would never cease, mid at
this writing it lias'nt ceased Hence
theso few remarks. Wo don’t want any-
ono to think that we don’t want it to
rain, for we do. We are eubugb of «
farmer to know that onr potatoes, peas,
cabbages, lettuce, celery, and other
things needed it—hence, let it rain.

Farm Dots.
Cotton planting has begun.
Sunday night's glorious rains was just
what was needed. Vegetation lias taken
on new life.
It is now fully conceded tin* (lie nrea
to be cultivated in our section is less this !
jear that for several years past; conse
quently better worked crops and a large
yield may be looked for.
A number of our farmers are anxious for
tbe erection of n rice mill. This impor
tant crop is now almost entiroly ueglect-
cdjfor want of a mill to clean it.
We are glad to note that the value and
importance of improved agricultural im-
pliinents is beginning to be felt und rec
ognized. Their introduction here is
somewhat slow, but we hope sure.
The cut worm and the Li coin hug are
begii.iug to vex the soul of the industri
ous gardener. Uemedies as numerous as
the pests themselves are proscribed, but
tbe best May is to catch and kill each in- |
seel. Tedious work, bnt very effective.
Au unusually large water melon crop
is being plunled. ft is not an ensy mat
ter to vverstoek the market with real fine
melons, and there is money in them. We
knew a farmer lost year to make over a
hundred dollars on an acre in water mel
ons beanies a good crop of peas. Plant
melons.
The editor of the Telegraph and Memen-
tier referring to the question, whether cot
ton or corn is King,is in favor of giving the
sceptre of royalty to.the scrawny, hal (starv
ed und much abused Georgia mule, that
cm die in tho Fall and be resnmeted tho
following Spring “to stand for” a family
of a dozen. Since thinking about it we
don’t know but that the editor oftho Tel
egraph anil Memenyer is correct.
The drought last year with its disnstri-
oiis irsults was bad enough, but it was
not all for the worst. An all wise Provi
dence has so arranged tho great laws of
compensation und reactiou that what
is lost at ono tirno is gained at unothcr.
Scienoe shows that a drought is only a
blessing in dlsgnise. Nature has stored
in tho earth a rich supply of phosphates,
silicates, carbonates und other chemical
silts essuiitial to vegetable life. Those
on the surface are soon exhausted and the
largo supply at greater dopths is often
unreached by snb-soil ploughing. As to
sub-soiling, little or none of it is dono in
our section. Drought is tmtar9's sub
soil plow to bring up tho rich nutriment
below. When the snrfuco is parched tho
sun linws moisture from the deeper soil,
and this moisture brings with it in solu
tion, salts of lime and magnesia, of pot
ash and soda. The moisture evaporates,
but leaves the salts for tho use of plants
and grain. Drought therefore does ft,
double work. It parches the surface, j
and lessons tho present crop. It forces
up rich nutriment from the deeper soil j
and enlarges future crops.
da)'. I guess
planting soed aro very scarce; as a great
many are wanting to buy or borrow seed
to plant their crops. I have been report
ing our grain crops to bo very fine. I
am very sorry to say now that I think
the wheat crop will be a complete failure.
Oats are still looking fine. The flies
have nearly ruined tho wheat. If they
continue a few days more they will ruin
it entirely. Homo of our best planters
have plowed up their wheat and will
plant corn or cotton in its place. You
can guest from this wlmt tho prospects
arc. If wo make no wheat this year this
will bo the third year wo have made a
failure. Tho Hies don't seem to trouble
the oats whero there is wheat, hut I ain
told where there’s no wheat they are play
ing havoc with oats. If we muke a fail
ure this year in a wheat crop we will cer
tainly quit the businoss, as we have lost
a good deal of money trying to ntnka it
by preparing and manuring lands very
highly. I don’t know any ono in onr
neighborhood but what will lose tho seed
he planted for his wheat crop.
Yours, Truly, W. B. S.
