As the artesian well of Albany,
Ga., it now a fixed fact, there are,
and will be, a great many questions
asked about such wells. I pro
pose, in a series of short articles,
to lie published in your daily pa
per every Tuesday morning, to
answer many of the questions that
will he asked.
Artesian wells are cither bored
or drilled, owing to whether the
earth is made tip of rock, sand or
clay. Equally both processes arc
employed. The wells are thus
named from Artois, a province in
France, where they have been for
a long time in use. All boiling
springs are artesian wells, formed
by nature. Tlie source ol water is
much higher than the spring, and
running under ground often comes
near the surface, and breaking tlie
crust of the earth the wiiter boils
up and runs otf above ground.
Some of tlie natural wells are small
and some quite large. Of the lat
ter class is the Blue Spring on L.
Sterne's place near this city. Some
persons may think that the supply
of water will increase or decrease,
or may dry up altogether, but tlie
laws of nature nre so fixed that af
ter a well is bored a certain size
and depth the quantity of water
running from it will always remain
the same, whether tho yenr is a re
markably dry or wet one, and the
supply will never cease. If the
youngest child in Albany should
live one hundred years be would
still find this well giving forth the
same quantity of watertbat it does
now, unless it is stopped by some
natural cause, such ns an earth
quake, or seme artificial cause,
such ns stopping the well so that
the water cannot How. This is
what makes these wells so valuable.
Houses may decay or burn down,
but this well, which has been bored
and drilled in Albany this winter
will still be furnishing about the
same quantity of water when every
man, woman and child now living
in the city shall be gone never to
return.

Wheat and Cam Raising.

Mr. Cole, of Illinois, after an ex-
pcricncc of twenty years, estimates
the cost of raising an acre of corn
at $S, anilfan acre of wheat at $10,-
50—the corn husked and placed in
crib, and the wheat stored in the
granary. An acre of oats or other
small grain will cost about tlie
same ns wheut. If the general av
erage lor a series of years will be
lllty bushels per acre for corn, and
sixteen bushels per acre for wheat,
any one ean easily calculate tlie
net profit. My estimates on this
supposition would he that the net
prolit of an acre ol corn would be
♦ 12, nud that of wheat would he
$8. This includes nil of the items
of labor nml outlay, nnd the av
erage rent of land. Corn is the
most sure of nil crops raised in the
West; oats ranks next in order.
As to treatment of lands to avoid
injurious effects of drouth, I would
sny, deep plowing and line tilth. As
to corn grounds, stir frequent and
deep, and avoid breaking off the
roots ns much as possible.
