There was a doctor in the camp,
and he came up quiokly, and push
ed the profbssor away.

he looked up in utter liewilder-
ment at old Mr. Stanford, who was
just hurrying in.
“You old fraud 1” he said, “What
is this game you have .been play

“My daughter, gentlemen,” said
the old man; “and the best and
purest little woman In California.
She said she would give her life
for the professor some day, and
I reckon that-it*ie a very near
thing.”
“No, it ain’t,” said the deotor.
“I’ll cure her. Carry her to your
cabin.”
“It yon cure her, dock, you can
take my pile,” said the professor.
“Yon know ine; and while we are
about it, I reckon we can’t do bet

"Every rip,” answered one of
tho miners.

It was enough to say that none

Gold Bar.
The professor never left her
night or day until she bad recover
ed, und one day the camp was wild
with excitement at the news that

from a distant camp.
The professor actually shaved
for the occasion, and surprised
every one by turning out to be a
very good looking fellow, not more
