When newspapers ore not called for It li made
ho duty of Postmasters under the law to notify
tho proprietor* of this fact. Cards, already print*
ed, arc furnished on application to the Postmaster,
whose only duty will be to HO ont with the name
f the party not getting the paper.
A New York dispatch, of April
noth, says: ‘‘An attempt was made
yesterday on the lives of W. H.
Vanderbilt and Cyrus W. Field by
sending them explosives through
tho mails.- Fortunately the dan
gerous character of the packages
were discovered en route to the
post-office station, whence they
were to lie delivered at the resi
dence ol these gentlemen, and so
their probable loss of tile was pre
vented.”
The Washington correspondent
of the Atlanta Constitution says:
It is now understood among the
Georgians at the capital that Mr.
Stephens will, if his health con
tinues as good as it now is, allow
his friends to use his name ns a
candidate for governor. He will
not, however, lie the candidate ol
any party but the democracy, to
which his devotion seems strength
ening as he grows older. Indeed,
he mentioned ns one of tho highest
considerations inducing him to lay
uslde his resolution to retire from
public life the hope that he may
aid in preserving the strength and
unanimity of Ids party in Qeorgiu.
Judge Lynch appears to have
moved hia circuit entirely out of
the South and to have extended it
over the West. Within the last
three days the lynching of no less
than fivecriminnla hy mobs in Wes
tern States 1ms been reported. At
Lake City, Colorado, on tho 27th,
a mob took from jail George llctts
and Jim Brown, accused of mur
der, and hung them. At Iirooks-
vllie, Ky., a party of men overpow
ered the jailor, and took out Wil
liam and Bradford Courts, accused
of murder, and hung them to tho
samo limb. At Minneapolis, Minn.,
on Friday, a mob broke into tho
jail and brought out and hung
Frank Crowly, of Boston, for rape
of a little girl. Judge Lynch is
getting in his work pretty well
Gen. L. J. Gartrcll, in an interview
with a representative of tile Con
slitution, that on Friday, declared
his purpose to continue In the Held
as a candidate for Uovcrnor, wheth
er Mr. Stphens is run or not, or in
deed whether anybody else is run.
Ho says that Ills idea of imlcpen
dentism is not to nmkc any nomi
nation, and that he does not tin
derstand the “new movement”
mass meeting to be held in Atlanta
on the 1st of June, ns having been
called to nominate candidates, lie
correctly thinks thnt a mass meet
ing of that kind, atlunded hy any
one who uhoosos to go, will not
represent tho people, but only those
present, and that they will tukc u
“snap judgment” by resolving
themselves into n representative
party and making nominations
Henry Wattersou, of tho Louis
ville Courier-Journal is alter New
England declaring that “it ia as
certain as the destruction of state-
rights that Now Kugland will be
the flrst victim of the overthrow.
New York, with six or eight mill
ions and two senators; Illinois with
Bix or eight millions and two semi-
tora;Texaa withten millions and two
senators, will turn upon those six
little brier-patches, with their four
or live millions and twelve senators,
and we shall sec such a process of
centralization as will make the old
est monarchies open their eyes.
We shall see a telescoping of Fa-
neuil hall and the Charter Oak ami
all the state capitals dumped down
somewhere iu tho valley of Connec
ticut, and for six states and twelve
senators one state and two. To
this end are such men ns Edmunds,
Frye, and Hoar, Chandler, Hale
and Boutwell driving the powerful
fabric whicli Yankee thrift and
\ankce pluck and Yankee genius
have reared and maintained so
long.”
The colored contestant, Lynch,
Las been given Gen. Chalmer’a
place by a party vote of 12ft to 104,
in congress.

Editok Reborder:—-As you have
favored me by publishing two or
three letters in yonr excellent pa
per I feel encouraged to write
another. But if it is not worthy
of space in your columns just east
it into your waste basket.
lam pleased to inform you of
our flattering prospects in the way
of agricultural pursuits, notwith
standing the farmers were greatly
discouraged while attempting to
pitch their crops, on account of
wet weather, and the scarcity of
corn. But kind Providence smiled
upon their efforts and gave them
means to make their crops without
corn. At least two-thirds of our
farmers arc cultivating their crops
with stock that feed upon the grass,
and their stock is doing well. In
conversation with one of our best
planters yesterday, he informed
me thnt he was running seven
plows and that lie Imd not fed
seveu bushels of corn; that he ex
pected to depend entirely on the
grass until his oats came in. Sev
eral one and two liorac planters
have not fed one single gram of
corn up to present. The wisest
farmer I know is a near neighbor,
who purchased two horses because
corn was scarce. At flrst his
neighbors thought him foolish, but
now they think different, for while
he is plowing two horses lie has at
the same time two others on the
grasH. This enables him to keep
ilia plows moving with fat horses.
At- present the future seems
bright, lor we are blessed with ex
cellent health, and the candidates
are looking so lovely we can almost
sec Heavenly bliss in their faces.
God bless the candidates. I wish
that tlie election days wouid come
every moon for the candidates do a
fellow so much good. They will
squeeze his hand, and tell him how
well they love him, and they will
take a fellow around tho corner and
fill him full of spirits, (not Holy
Spirit like Peter and the other de-
eiples were filled with on the day
of Pcntacost;) hut I imagine that
the apirits the candidates give
make one fellow talk more than
Peter and all the other disciples
did with their Holy Spirit. Grout
many of our voters arc cxpectiug
to turn up jack or catch him in
their next election. They are
being organized all over this coun
try in what is called the “green
back laboring party club.” You
would bo surprised to kuow bow
this party is building tqi in this
country. The principle members
arc the luboriug elass. They are
at w«rk iu earnest.
Before I conclude I must tell you
somthing about our enterprising
CBunty. VVe can boast of the fin
est public building in eastern Tex
as. Of course you think it is a court
house, church or school house. It
is u school house, but we call it a
jail house. And besides we arc
very liberal, for wheu a fellow is
guilty of violating our laws, anil
tho court assesses a fine from the
violator, instead of collecting the
fine, he is put iu this line building,
mid furnished plenty to eat ami
drink and is paid three dollars per
day. Then you will not be Bur-
prised to learn that we have sever
al occupants in our tine jail. And
besides all this, we have some ol
the cheapest lands in the state.
name tmtll after the tlectlon, any
bow, for I may take a notion to be
a candidate too, and I don’t want
the people to know, my position.
Of course I will tell them, (as it is
customary) that I would go to jail
and live on bread and water for
their good, Ac. Bnt if I get elect
ed they all can go to the post for
what I care. This is customary in
our county, speaking in a general
term,—from Constable up to Presi
dency. Mr. Editor, I must close,
but before I tell you who I am I
must tell you that I can’t do with
out, the “Recorder.” Mytimeex-

eye skined watching the poat-office j
for a postal order for I am bound-1

I can get it at $2 for 12 month.!
You and your rendrs have my best. I

Mr. Mahone, familiarly known ns
“Billy,” and officially known as :
Senator, has not been as successful
in his schemes as his ardent soul
had iioped. By virtue of his posi
tion lie got control of the federal
patronage of Virginia, and secured
the election of iiis friend and co-
repudiator as a senator iu congress.
Every thing was working nicely,
till a few weeks ago, the Idea be
gan to prevail that “Billy” was not
sinserc in his professions, but was
selling ont his people for his own
benefit. Several memhors ol the
Virginia legislature got this notion
into their heads, and when lie at
tempted to have passed bills re
constructing tho jndiciary, gerry
mandering tho state for congress
ional purposes, and creating a real
estate commissioncrship in each
county, they refused to answer yea
to his call. Mr. Arthur waa called
upon to use bis influence ami en
voys were sent to Richmond to
carry the messages ot federal pro
tection and aid and comfort to
those who would stand firm. A
few that had bowed their knees to
tho modern Baal were on their feet
again, aud refused further to de
base themselves. “Billy” propos
ed to adjourn till June, but the
kickers and democrats voted to
adjourn sine die, and “Billy’' uiid
his supporters have to stand it.
The obnoxious bills were not passed,
and “Billy” is not as big a mall as
be thought be was.

A new whiskey ring appears to
be the last swindle developed at
Washington City. The amount of
money to be taken from the United
Stales revenue hy the ring meas
ure now before congress is $50,000,-
000. This is s line sum to reward
tlm virtues of addition, division
and silence. One object of the
measure is to force the government
into tlie whiskey business. The
ring lmvo so arranged matters that,
liy refusing to pay taxes upon the
whisky in bond, they can purchase
it at government auction for less
than tlm amount of the taxes.
This can lie accomplished by aim
ply allowing tho stock of whisky
to accumulate in bond, under the
proposed law, until tlie market is
glutted, the prices are reduced and
the provision of the present law as
to tlie payment of taxes becomes
inoperative- The new whisky ring
threatens President Arthur’s ad
ministration, as the old one Prcsi.
